Dallas Smalley Obituary

Mr. Dallas Smalley, 69, of Panama City, died August 2, 2020, surrounded by his family. Dallas was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 28, 1951, to Dallas W. and Margaret (Anne) Davis Smalley.  After graduation from Edgewater High School in Orlando, Dallas served in the United States Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged.  He was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Debra Glass Smalley.  He moved to Bay County in 1974, and on March 25, 1978, Dallas married Debra Stewart, and together they raised Dallas' son, Scott Dallas Smalley.

Dallas always liked to say he was "the luckiest man alive."  He absolutely loved what he did for a living, interacting with his customers for more than 46 years at Bay Cycle and Fitness.  He had a passion for putting his customers on a bicycle and enjoying their excitement.  He also was known for his "need for speed" and always enjoyed his Sunday morning rides with his motorcycle buddies.

Dallas had a desire to help others prosper in their passion, so in July of 2000, Dallas and Robin Wilks formed Robin's Bike and Fitness in Destin.  Even though he later sold his interest in this venture, Dallas's spirit lives on at Robin's shop.

Left to cherish Dallas's memory is his wife of 42 years, Debra (aka Debbie); son, Scott (Melissa); grandchildren: Cameron, Lauren, and Brooke; brother, James Smalley (Gail), and nieces and nephews.

The family is very appreciative of the outpouring of love extended during this difficult time. However, out of concern for the health and safety of our family and friends during this pandemic, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either: The Arc of the Bay, 1804 Carolina Ave., Lynn Haven, FL 32444, www.bayarc.org – or – Alaqua Animal Refuge, 914 Whitfield Rd., Freeport, FL 32439, www.alaqua.org.  Expressions of sympathy may be submitted and viewed at www.southerlandfamily.com.

I have fond memories of the time spent motorcycle riding and visiting with him, even though we weren't the closest of friends. He was always a cheerful presence, his infectious smile brightening up every trip. What I remember most about him is his willingness to lend a helping hand, whether it was fixing a motorcycle issue on the road or just being there with a word of encouragement. He made those rides unforgettable, and his positive spirit was a true gift.

I was so sorry to hear of Dallas's passing. His family lived on our street from the 50's through 1969. My earliest memories were of Dallas riding his bicycle with all the boys that lived on our street. Always with his trusty dogs Sport and Lucky. Gone to soon
My deepest condolences to his family. Another Edgewater Eagle has taken flight.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We are so very sorry for your loss.
Dallas was our go to since moving here 5 years ago. We’ve had many bikes new and old worked on, bought and sold bikes from him, and every visit was always a pleasure to talk with him. He was very friendly, hard working, loved what he did, and always took great care of us with our bikes. Thank you.
Dallas you will be missed.
Rest in Peace.

My sincere condolences to the family. To me, Dallas started out as the guy that sold and maintained bikes - always supportive and encouraging. Over the years, I considered him a friend. I always enjoyed the rides with him and the group. I remember one particular Saturday morning ride. Dallas didn't much care for riding in cold, dreary weather and that's what we had. Heading home between Southport and Lynn Haven, the sun came out beautifully. Next thing we know, Dallas blasts out of the pack towards the front with a big smile and pulled us all home. Dallas was also very helpful and supportive when i got into motorcycles as well. Over time, I never felt like i needed to a have a bike related issue as an excuse to stop by the shop and just catch up - I'll miss those visits. I will also never forget when he stopped by to check on us at the house after the hurricane - so great to see his face at a time like that. I will miss that smile and laugh.

Dallas will forever be in our hearts and memories. He always brought a smile to our faces and had an uncanny way of lifting our spirits. I believe he epitomizes the Golden Rule of doing unto others as you would have them do unto you. I believe he is watching over us all as we roll on down the highway, whether it be on our bicycles or on a motor bike. See you in Heaven brother.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. The Young family will continue to keep Deb, Scotty in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. ... For me personally... It will be the many memories of the endless miles we rode together that will sustain us through this difficult time. The many century rides, Tuesday /Thursday battle royal through the Cove , the saturday mornings before the shop opened, Sunday afternoon on 388 east. It was your care and concern for everyone that made walking into the shop feel like your were at home. Your off the wall witty humor, infectious laugh and joy for life you shared with each one of us, to step out, try something different, always supportive, always there for us. It is all of these things I will cherish and keep close to my heart. As before and to the end of time The back of my cycling jersey shall always say " This space is reserved for Dallas Smalley " . I will miss you my dear friend

My sincere condolences to Debbie and the family. I can see Dallas now, he is on his last motorcycle ride, one that will never end and grinning from ear to ear wondering how he can make his motorcycle go faster. He is riding the never ending road of long sweeping curves and looking forward to where he can stop for breakfast. Some great times were shared on Sunday morning rides with his friends, and he will always be remembered! Keep your feet on the pegs and wheels on the ground. Rest in Peace my friend!

Extremely sorry to hear about Dallas. Richard Baker gave me the news today. I believe the last time I visited him was in late summer of 2018. Always enjoyed seeing him and would drop in when I was back in town for whatever reason. I bought my first $1000 plus bike from him in early '91 when he was on Jenks and Airport. He had a great sense for people and always had a quip. Have good memories of the few times I did the Cove shop ride. Your family will be in my prayers. Rest in peace Dallas.

I talked to Dallas on the phone several times looking for some new bikes. He was so warm and helpful that we developed a friendship and drove from Pensacola to buy from him. We called him this week and were shocked to find that our new friend is gone. Praying for his sweet family. He spoke very lovingly of you.

We will all miss Dallas, I know I will. Dallas was an inspiration to many, including me. His calm, generous and gentle manner as well as his overriding concern for others was an example to everyone who crossed his path. He encouraged so many to get out and "enjoy the ride". I vividly recall one particular group bicycle ride where we were all caught in a vicious wind while riding down Front Beach Road; I went back to see if he wanted me to ride with him, with both of us trading off to get through the wind. He told me, "No, you go ahead, I have to ride my ride, everybody has to ride his own ride". Dallas did, indeed, always ride his own ride and, despite his words that day, never failed to help many make their way through life and the inevitable head winds. Dallas, you were a gentle soul while here among us and may your spirit now be welcomed with never-failing peace and love; and also, my prayers to Debbie, Scott, and all who mourn, that we all may be granted the gifts of comfort and peace. Godspeed my brother.

Dallas & Debbie we’re neighbors and friends. They were kind to us when we moved a few houses down, brought me stuff when I had surgery on my foot and also offered me jobs around their house to help me out. Dallas ALWAYS spoke and made sure all was well with me. The world needs more people like Dallas and Debbie. He will be missed. Much love to Debbie and Family

Debbie and Family - Dallas was one of the first people I met when I moved here in 1989. He immediately welcomed me like an old friend when meeting the local cycling community. The Tuesday/Thursday evening rides out of his shop on Airport Rd are forever burned into my mind - especially with Dallas making sure nobody got his hallowed space - on big Rick Young’s wheel. We all had so many great times on and off the bike and I loved how he could diffuse any tense situation with his sense of humor and that eye-squinting riotous laugh.
He has been and will always be sorely missed in this community and elsewhere. My family’s prayers for his restful repose and strength for you and yours are with you. God bless you all. The John Montgomery family

Dallas was one of the finest people that I’ve ever known. So many great memories riding with him for years on bicycles and just talking to him at the shop. He taught me how to ride a bicycle and sold me quite a few bikes. He was one of the best mechanics that I have known and I will miss him sorely. Rest In Peace Dallas I will see you again soon.
