Larry Mathis Obituary

It is with great sorrow and grief that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father, son, and brother, Larry E. Mathis. He passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013.

Larry was born August 2, 1946 to Inez and Robert Mathis. He graduated from Rutherford High School in the first graduating class of 1964; it was there he earned the nickname "The Toe" for his place kicking skills in football. After high school, Larry joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served the country he loved so much.

After his military service, Larry was employed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, from which he retired in 2001. He was currently working with Bay County in the Roads and Bridges department.

Larry loved his God, and dearly loved his family. He is preceded in death by his son, Justin Mathis; and father, Robert Mathis. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Frances; two sons, Jeremy and wife Katie, and Evan and fiancée Lindsey Clark; two grandchildren, Sarah and Jerrett Mathis; mother, Inez Mathis; brother, Bobby Mathis and wife Nancy; two sisters, Connie Cobb and husband Bruce, and Patty Nicholas and husband Brent; mother-in-law, Wilda Berry; sister-in-law, Deborah Norton and husband Gary; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a very special group of friends with whom he shared a special bond, Ronnie and Tot Johnson, Mike and Belinda Grainger. and Horace and Nina Pitts.

Larry enjoyed hunting, camping, and playing Bluegrass music. He touched many lives through is goodness and generosity to others.

He loved much and was much loved. He will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Virgil Tillman and Rev. Don Hodges officiating. Mr. Larry was a good friend and mentor who taught me a lot about life, living as a Christian, "digging in the dirt", and to have a finer appreciation for "pickin' and grinnin'". He always had a smile and great sense of humor, and I always loved listening to his stories. We'll all miss him. Mr. Larry was a man who made a difference in his life.

We are shocked and very heavy hearted to hear of your loss, the neighborhood will hear the silence in the days to come Larry was such a sweet and caring person, he always waved and gave the smile when we drove by, he will be greatly missed, our prayers are unceasing for your family, the only comfort in all of this is that I know he is in the arms of angels and singing the praises of our father in Heaven
