George Stokes Obituary
Mr. George Washington Stokes, 81, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 in Umatilla, Florida.
The funeral service will be conducted 10 a.m. Friday in the Wilkerson Funeral chapel in Greenville with his grandson, The Reverend Father Michael Eatmon, Assistant Pastor of The Church of the Incarnation of Orlando, FL and The Reverend Thomas Biggs, Pastor of Cape Colony Church of Christ in Edenton, NC officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton.
A Pitt County native, Mr. Stokes was a former resident of the Edenton community. For the past two years he had made his home in Florida for six months and in eastern North Carolina for six months. A World War II veteran, he served in Port Lyautey, French Morocco in a PBY squadron, VP-63, hunting the German submarines during the war. He stayed in service after the war and served a total of 22 years in the US Navy. After retiring at the rank of Master Chief, he worked with the Stanwick Corp. in Norfolk, VA and the Virginia Beach School System in Virginia Beach, VA. He also served as Chowan County Veterans Service Officer.
Mr. Stokes was a past commander of American Legion, Post 40, in Edenton, NC, and served on the Department of NC American Legion Administrative Committee for five years. He was also a member of La Societe des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux and MAL of the Fleet Reserve Association. Through hard work and dedication he realized his dream for a Chowan County Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated on his birthday on November 11, 1991.
Mr. Stokes is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Maggie Stokes of Umatilla, FL; two daughters, Paula Stokes Eatmon and husband, Allen, of Tavares, FL; and Pamela Stokes Roberts of Butner, NC; five sisters, Alma S. Mills of Chocowinity, NC, Emma S. Brewer of Greenville, NC, Nancy S. Everett of Greenville, NC, Esther S. Tyson of Washington, NC and Sylvia S. Bailke of Havelock, NC; three brothers, Frederick Stokes of Crowley, LA, James Hardee Stokes of Greenville, NC and Melvin B. Stokes of Wilmington, NC; three grandchildren; five great- grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville.
