Kate Kitchin Obituary
Miss Kate Parks Kitchin, 90, died on Monday, March 25, 2002 at Nash General Hospital. She was born on Easter Day, April 16, 1911, the daughter of the late John Arrington and Norma Cloman Kitchin.
Miss Kitchin, anative of Scotland Neck, graduated from St. Mary's Junior College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her Master of Arts degree from Teacher's College at Columbia University. She completed her graduate work at Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina.
Miss Kitchin first taught at Woodland High School, but was affiliated with Rocky Mount Senior High School from 1936 until she retired. She was Dean of Girls, Guidance Counselor, English teacher, Chairman of the Guidance Department, and Adviser to the Student Council.
For two three-year terms Miss Kitchin was Executive Secretary of the North Carolina Student Council Congress. She also served in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in many capacities on the local level, as Secretary, Vice-President, and President of the State Organization for six years.
Miss Kitchin enjoyed membership in the Literary Review Club and was a sustaining member in the Junior Guild. In 1978 she was named RockyMount's ""Woman of the Year"", and was the recipient of the DAR Medal of Honor. She was also listed in Who's Who of American Women. To paraphrase William Wordsworth- ""She was a Perfect Teacher - nobly planned.""
A life long Episcopalian, services will held for Miss Kitchin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 28 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rocky Mount. The Rev. Bollin M. Millner Jr. will be officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Interment will be 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Scotland Neck. The Rev. Ronald Hiester will officiate. Other times the family will receive guests at the home of Mrs. William Arrington Kitchin, 4940 Highway 258 North, Scotland Neck.
Miss Kitchin is survived by her sisters-in-law, Hanna Richardson Kitchin and Evelyn McEntire Kitchin; nieces and nephews, William Arrington Kitchin Jr. and wife, Joan Tew, James Richardson Kitchin and wife, Mary Green, Hanna Kitchin Herring and husband, William Shields, and William Cloman Kitchin; step-niece, Edith McEntire; six grand-nieces and nephews and five great-grand-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kate Parks Kitchin Scholarship Fund, Class of 42, 940 Hill Street Rocky Mount, NC 27801.
Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
