Mary Louise Evans Gunn, 87, passed away peacefully at Duke Regional Medical Center on Thursday, April 24, 2014. She was born in Pittsboro, NC on April 11, 1927 and moved to Durham, NC at a very early age. A member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, she served as Deaconess Emeritus, a member of the Health Ministry and a member of the Half-Century Club which recognizes persons who have been members of the church for 50 years. She worked as a nurse, a profession she loved, at Duke Medical Center, UNC-CH Memorial Hospital and private duty nursing for 35 years while rearing six children. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mom, grandma aka "MeeMa" and "G-ma" and great-grandma aka "G-G Ma".

In 1977 she was the proud recipient of the Durham Chamber of Commerce Mother of the Year Award.

She was preceded in death by her mother Thena Evans Noell and her husband of 55 years, and the love of her life, William S. Gunn. Mrs. Gunn is survived by three daughters: Linda Gunn-Jones (Anthony) of Raleigh; Monika Gunn-Holloway and Fern Gunn Simeon (Mark) of Durham and three sons: Wm. Lloyd Gunn, Marcilen L. Gunn (Linda), and Milton P. Gunn, of Durham; four grandchildren: Christopher Gunn Holloway (Shanti) and Allison Gunn Simeon of Durham; Marcilen Lloyd Gunn of Charlotte; and Marilouise E. Jones (W. Lafayette, IN); five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, 1:00 p.m., at the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 2200 South Alston Avenue, Durham. The family will receive family and friends prior to the service from 12:00 noon -1:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Beechwood Cemetery, Durham.
