Richard Pindell Obituary

Richard S. Pindell, III

October 2, 1935 - June 19, 2015

Wrightsville Beach

Richard S. Pindell, III, 79, passed away peacefully Friday, June 19th at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington.

Rick was born in Alamance County, NC to the late Richard S. Pindell, Jr. and Matilda Mann Pindell. He is survived by his son Richard Scott Pindell and daughter Elizabeth Pindell White; grandchildren Angela White Brewer (Lentz) and Richard Thomas White; his brother Jack Mann Pindell (Julia) as well as many nieces and nephews.

A proud Blue Devil, Rick attended Duke University where he was a student manager of the Duke Basketball team. Rick enlisted in the US Air Force and was recognized as the Airman of the Year in 1958 at Hunter Air Force Base. He enjoyed a 45 year career in real estate in Raleigh, where he served as President of the Raleigh Board of Realtors, President of the Realtors Institute, and served on the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Association of Realtors, before retiring to Wrightsville Beach.

Rick loved to travel, play golf and tennis, watch Duke Basketball, and listen to jazz.

Rick was quick to ask any stranger, "Where are you from?" confident that he could make a connection, and a new friend. His outgoing personality and positive attitude will be remembered by many as "fandamntastic".

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 28th at 2pm, with a reception following at Little Chapel on the Boardwalk, 2 W. Fayetteville Street, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480.

In lieu of flowers, Rick requested that a donation be made to either LOWER CAPE FEAR HOSPICE (1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401) or SHE ROCKS, a local non-profit that supports the Zimmer Cancer Center in Wilmington and the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center in Chapel Hill (PO Box 215, Wilmington, NC 28402).

Rick loved to take pictures and never missed an opportunity to offer to take a picture for others. One he took on a restaurant wall I still have on my refrigerator: Laugh when you can. Apologize when you should, and let go of what you can't change. Kiss slowly, forgive quickly. Play hard, take chances. Give everything and have no regrets. Life is too short to be anything but happy. I miss you Rick and welcomed the opportunity to send you Love.

Rick was always such a fine gentleman and cheerful person. He was also an able leader in the real estate profession.

No matter how bad my day was going, every time he came into Boca Bay, he could put a smile on my face. He was affectionately known as Mr. P to most of the staff. I have heard the phrase,"fandamntastic" for the past 9 years. I am saddened to hear of his passing. He will be missed.

We met Rick five years ago playing golf together, when he recognized us as 'Yankees,' and perhaps skeptical ones at that. He assured us he and his friend were 'two of the finest southern gentlemen you're ever likely to meet.' Chuckle at that as we have over the years, there has never been a doubt that he was absolutely right. We miss him.

Sending family sympathy especially to Jack whom I met at ECU during our college days. We were related through the Chesson family (my mom's name), and I saw this obit while reading the current one for my dear friend, Norma Grabenstein of Wilmington.

Rick was a good friend of my Raleigh Jaycees husband Howard Twiggs, who thought the world of Rick. I was happy to rediscover Rick here in Wilmington when we both shopped at Harris Teeter on "senior discount" days. He had not changed a bit, full of life, conversation, optimism, a delightful and unique man. I will miss him very much.

Rest easy and watch over us from your new balcony. You are missed already my friend. You and I shared many jokes and good times watching the boats go by the last 15 years. I am glad that you are in peace and I know you are in good company. I am proud to call you a dear friend.

To Rick's Family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I lived at Seapath last year and Rick was very kind and welcoming. He made sure to invite me to all the trips to Rucker Johns. When my family was in town he took us to dinner and had taken pictures of my boys singing at Seapath. He was a good man and he was always, "Fandamntastic!" I am grateful that I knew Rick. He was a true Southern gentleman. Thank you for sharing him with us.
May you find peace knowing his is with our Lord.

I want to extend my deepest sympathy to all the members of the family of Richard S. Pindell,III.The full measure of this exceptional man's legacy will sustain his memory for all of us for many years to come. The list of his lifetime accolades were more than most men even dream about. I think of even more importance was the fact that this refined southern gentleman, was honest, humble and admired as a bona fide friend of all who knew him.We only meet a handful of men of this caliber during our lives...indeed, Rick was one of them. He was a man of mark, who made a true-to-life difference and left an indelible footprint for all those who follow. Two things resonant most in my minds eye of "Captain Rick" [as I called him], were his beaming smile and his vibrant personality, that always said, Hey! I'm really glad to see you! I feel he might like to ask us to pay forward his cheerful smile and the pleasure of the happiness that he found in daily life.May we all find comfort as we move through the coming days....Sincerely, William Campbell Hunter..Raleigh, N.C.

I worked for Rick for 7 years back in the 80's and he was such a wonderful friend. I remember that he gave me much fatherly advice during the time I worked for him. He was a gentleman and a good friend. I pray his family will be comforted during this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Nice picture of you. I knew Rick for 5 years, this month- my daughter Jessica introduced us at his favorite Starbucks in Wilmington. I would joke about being his part-time girlfriend in Durham since he came to town infrequently. We had many talks and even though I never met his family, I felt I knew them to be human and caring. My deepest condolences to his daughter, grandson, his brother Jack and his wife Julia who called to let me know, his 'adopted' daughter Lisa and to his beloved church. I hope to be there for the services- I never knew him to miss a funeral of a friend; Rick was Loved by so many.
I will miss your great stories, your sense of humor, smile and your generous nature.. I'm sure there are memories we all cherish.
Rick, thanks for the memories, you are unforgettable. God bless you always.

From Seapath with Love.
