Thomas Broughton Obituary

Thomas Battle Broughton, II

January 23, 1951 - October 29, 2020

Smithfield

Smithfield – Thomas Battle "Tom" Broughton, II, age 69, died Thursday, October 29, 2020 at his home. Born January 23, 1951 in Wake County he was a son of Dorothy Mizelle Broughton of Raleigh and the late Thomas Battle Broughton, Sr. Tom grew up in Raleigh where he attended Broughton High School and is a graduate of UNC Charlotte. He served our county in the Air Force where his talent as a drummer shined in the Air Force Band. His role as an economic developer allowed him to foster communities: Rocky Mount, Edgecombe Co. & Johnston Co. He was a commercial real estate broker and most recently a Magistrate Judge for Johnston County. Tom was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a local scout leader for over 10 years. He enjoyed boating and being in Kure Beach whenever he had the chance. Tom's greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters, Emery and Margot.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Jane Broughton of Smithfield; son, Michael Broughton and wife Erica of Raleigh; daughter, Jessica Sermarini and husband Mike of Cape Carteret; brother, William T. Broughton and wife Robin of Raleigh; and grandchildren, Emery Sermarini and Margot Broughton.

I knew Mr Broughton as a magistrate judge in Johnston County where I work as a bondsman. He was always so respectful, funny and just made my day better each time I saw him. He was always ready to help and I was always ready for the next joke. It was a pleasure to have known him and I will miss him very much. I pray his family feels peace during this sad time.

Tom was my brother in law. When Tom and Jane were dating, I will never forget him letting me join them on a ride in his little green MBG sports car. He was so proud of that car. He loved cars.
After he got the boat, he took me and my friends (the Hooters on Scooters) out on the inner coastal waterway. We had great fun and the girls still talk about that time with Tom and Jane.
He loved Kure Beach and really enjoyed fixing the beach house up even if he complained a little bit about how often he had to replace the porch screens.
Tom was smart. He knew lots of things about lots of topics. He really enjoyed learning about the weather and watching the forecasts every day. His nickname was The Weather Man.
Tom taught me how to shoot a pistol during a family gathering at Clear Run, the family farm. He told me he was proud of me and that I could actually hit the target:-).
I will miss you, Tom. You left us too soon!! Love, Susan

I did not know Thomas personally but I do know his daughter. Without a doubt he was an excellent father. She is an amazing human being , an excellent teacher and mother. I’m sure he was very proud of her and she is a living example of his character. May he Rest In Peace.
