Died: September 21, 2022 in Dunlap, IL
Rev. Theodore R. Hochstatter, 73 of Africa formerly of Mendota passed away unexpectedly on September 21, 2022, in Dunlap, Illinois. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday September 29 at 10:30 am in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mendota. Bishop Louis Tylka will officiate. Burial will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery Peterstown. There will be a visitation from 2 pm to 5 pm on Wednesday September 28 in Holy Cross Church, with an additional hour prior to the Mass. Wasmer Funeral Home is privileged to be assisting the family.
Fr. Ted was born August 7,1949 in Mendota to Richard and Dorothy (Henkel) Hochstatter. Ted was educated through 8th grade at Sts. Peter and Paul Church and primary school. He attended and graduated St. Joseph's Franciscan Minor Seminary in 1967 and graduated Quincy University in 1972. He was a Child Care Worker in Parmadale, Ohio. Fr. Ted's transitional diaconate ordination was in 1979. He then graduated from St. Meinrad School of Theology in 1980 and was Ordained to the Priesthood on May 24,1980. Fr. Ted celebrated his first Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul on May 25,1980. In September of 1990 Fr. Ted was blessed with meeting Mother Teresa and thereafter began his work with the Missionaries of Charity, beginning in 1993 with a post in Albania. He Con-celebrated Mass with Pope John Paul II in his private chapel in November of 1995, then days later kneeled before Mother Teresa and took his 4th vow of lifelong service to the poor. Fr. Ted arrived in Africa July of 2001, and it was his home for the remainder of his ministry. Fr. is survived by his 3 brothers Joe (Alicia) Hochstatter of Mendota, John (Barb) Hochstatter of Mendota and Ken Hochstatter of Montgomery, 2 sisters Susan (Rich) McLaughlin of Mendota and Cathy (Bill) Meyer of Huntley, 6 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, many cousins and his aunt Marian Hochstatter of Mendota. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be directed to Missionaries of Charity 506 Hancock Street Peoria, Illinois 61603. Condolences may be left at wasmerfuneralhome.com.

I met Fr Ted when I returned from Grad School in 1989. I had joined the Catholic Church one year prior as I headed to Grad School. At Fr Ted´s parish he hosted every morning Mon-Sat to pray the Office, the rosary & Mass and then every evening Sun-Sat to pray the Office and the rosary. We all became like brothers and sisters eating supper together every night. He became so much like a brother to me that he & I could/would argue at times yet still love each other. It was so very hard to see Fr Ted leave to do missionary work. But he would return yearly for rest. He returned from Africa in 2008 to participate in performing my wedding (something very special to me). I loved his laugh. It came as such a shock & painful experience to hear of his unexpected overnight death.

I´ve known FR Ted since 1989 when he was pastor of St Martin de Porres Parish in Peoria IL.
We traveled on Pilgrimage to Medjugorje together in 1989.
We also cleaned bricks together after a fire destroyed the rectory he was living in in order for the bricks to be reused to build his new rectory.
I cut his hair many times so you can imagine my surprise to see him sporting long hair & beard!!
I last cut his hair Sept 10th not dreaming that would be the last time I would see him this side of heaven.
GOD BLESS YOU FR TED. you will be missed especially by the children in Kenya Africa
