Thomas Murphy Obituary

MURPHY, THOMAS W. VI, Thomas W. Murphy VI, 60, of Hamden died peacefully Saturday, January 7, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished husband and best friend of Mary Murphy. Loving father of Thomas W. Murphy VII, of Pittsburgh, Michael P. Murphy and his wife Erin of Boston, Taylor J. Murphy of Hamden and Kerrigan M. Warnook and her husband Kevin of Rye, NY. Brother of Robert Murphy of Guilford, William Murphy of Andover, CT and Linda Smith of Chatham, MA. Tom was born in New Haven February 9, 1951 son of the late Thomas W. and Dorothy (Lukie) Murphy V. Mr. Murphy was a life-long spokesperson for education. His career in public service began right out of college when he worked as communication director for Mayor Robert Johnson in West Haven. He worked at the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities and for six years at the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education, and worked closely with the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents. For the last 19 years, he served as spokesman for the State Department of Education. Tom had attended Amity High School in Woodbridge and earned his degree in Sociology from the University of New Haven in 1975. As a long-time member and an avid tennis player, he also served on the Board of Directors of Paradise Country Club as tennis chairman for many years. Tom was a fiercely devoted husband and father, who was as proud of his children's accomplishments as his own. He taught them the importance of hard work and family. He instilled in them his selflessness, his characteristic charm and wit, his love of building things, of teaching, and of tennis. He will be greatly missed. Funeral from Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden Thursday at 9:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Joan of Arc Church. Burial in Beaverdale Memorial Park. I only heard about Tom's death today and I am just so sad to think he has passed. I remember only the vivid, tennis playing, dynamic man who I knew mainly as father of Taylor and Tom, good friends of my son. Tom always seemed so full of life and purpose, and was so close to Mary and his family. I send hugs and my sincere sympathy to you all for this incalculable loss that has come far too soon. May time bring healing, and may all the good memories only become stronger. Sarah Heath

Dear Murphy family,
I have known and had the pleasure of working with Tom from his days at CCM through his tenure at the Department of Education, but because I was a volunteer, not a full-time colleague, I never heard much about Tom's non-work life. The loving husband, wonderful father, and joyous participant in life I heard about Thursday morning described exactly the person I expected Tom to be based on my lengthy but limited exposure to him. Thank you for sharing him with us.
May his memory always be a comfort and a blessing for all of you.

Tom did his work at the DoE with honesty and dignity. He was both respected and liked by the press; we knew him as a very trustworthy man.

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Tom over the past year and a half.
Although I unfortunately only knew him for a relatively short period of time, I was always impressed with Tom's warmth, sense of humor, brilliant mind, extraordinary communication skills and his willingness to help so many people, including myself. We are all going to miss him! My sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

We were childhood buddies. I remember a night at HOJO's when Tommy came in after a date with Mary. He was in love. He was a dear friend to me and glad he shared his friendship and love with so many others. The world lost a beautiful person.
