Nancy "Tía Nancy" González

1925 - 2023

Nancy Clara Adela González Haces passed away peacefully on June 8, 2023 at the Lacombe Nursing Centre, in Lacombe, Louisiana. She was just a few weeks short of her 98th birthday. Nancy, or "Tía Nancy", as she was known affectionately by her family and friends, was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, on August 12, 1925. She escaped the Cuban socialist dictatorship in 1963 and resided in the New Orleans area for the following 60 years. Tía Nancy never married but was a compassionate and devoted aunt (hence her nickname) to practically all of her family members. She worked as a kindergarten teacher in Cuba and later as a kindergarten and pre-school teacher's assistant in New Orleans, and imparted her love and protection to the children that she took care and was always so fond of. Just as significant, she selflessly gave so much of her attention and love to all of her family members, mostly nephews and nieces and grandnephews and grandnieces. Tía Nancy was preceded in death by her father Conrado González, her mother María Juana Haces, her brother Conrado González Jr., her sister Elsa González Valdés-Fonte, her brother-in-law Raúl Valdés-Fonte and her sister-in-law Gladys Machado, all of Cienfuegos, Cuba. She is survived by her nephews Raúl Fonte (wife Helen Flammer), of New Orleans, and Conrad González, of Cumming, Georgia, and by her nieces Elsa Valdés-Fonte Baker (husband Robert Baker), of Lacombe, and Lourdes González, of Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by grandnephew Matteo González, of Cumming, and by grandnieces Miranda González, of Los Angeles, Raquel Fonte, of New Orleans, Adela Baker, of New Orleans, Cristina Baker Woods, of Port Chester, New York, and Tanya Baker, of Carlsbad, California, as well as several great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Lacombe Nursing Centre, which took such good care of Tía Nancy. A memorial mass to celebrate her life is being planned for a later date.
