Richard Collin Obituary

COLLIN Richard H. Collin, retired food critic and university history professor, passed away at his home in Birmingham, Alabama late Tuesday, January 19, 2010. He moved from New Orleans to Birmingham after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was born in Philadelphia, PA March 4, 1932, the only child of Barney and Esther Collin, immigrants from London. Educated at Kenyon College and New York University, he moved to New Orleans in the late 1960s to begin a long career teaching history at the University of New Orleans. He was a Theodore Roosevelt scholar, author of several books on the subject, published in 1985, 1990 and 1992, as well as many articles and essays. He pioneered restaurant food criticism in New Orleans and wrote "The New Orleans Underground Gourmet" (Simon and Schuster, 1970). With his late wife of 28 years, Rima (Rima Drell Reck), he wrote "The New Orleans Cookbook" which was published by Knopf in 1975. That book has become a classic, still in print today. They also wrote "The New Orleans Restaurant Guide: a Critical Guide to Eating Out" as well as "The Pleasures of Seafood". Following the death of his wife Rima in 1998, he wrote "Travels with Rima: a Memoir". Richard Collin traveled widely and loved museums, opera, modern British composers, --- and considered himself a "baseball and football intellectual". He is survived by first cousins Sheila Bayfield, Daphne Laredo and Myrtle Hirsh of London, England and a host of other cousins. He is remembered by his devoted companion Phyllis Mayronne and good friend Michael Ledet. There will be a private memorial service in New Orleans at a later date.

I was deeply sadden this weekend to learn of Dr. Collin's passing. He was by far my most fav teacher in college--nay, in my entire academic career. He challenged me to improve my writing style and to sharpen my thinking process. The two proudest moments I had at UNO were the first "A" I received on a paper in his class and the time I was one of only two students in the class to fully understand the meaning of Hemingway's A Moveable Feast when compared to Doctorow's Ragtime. I will sorely miss him but will always retain fond memories of the two classes I took with him. I still have my notebooks from theses classes.

He was, by far, my favorite UNO professor. He instilled in me the need to think of history from the other point of view, to consider all possibilities. My only regret was that my writing style never lived up to his expectations.

I met Dr. Collin after having typeset the cookbook he and late wife Rima wrote together - "The New Orleans Cookbook." He and my husband and I had dinner together and talked about the cookbook and his days as "The Underground Gourmet", and of course, our mutual love of good local "platonic dishes."

Dr. Collin was my favorite history professor. I have "The New Orleans Underground Gourmet" right behind me here at my office. What a strong impression he made, in an already strong department. Thank you, Dr. Collin, for all your effort and devotion.

And a great history teacher he was! His graduate course for high school history teachers made us all rethink teaching history "by the book." One of his classes met for poboys in the Irish Channel, one of them convened at Chez Helene. I am sad at his passing, but I remember Dick Collin happily.
