Diane Chillingworth Gould

San Antonio, TX - Diane Chillingworth Gould, 86, died December 1, 2018 of congestive heart failure in San Antonio, Texas. She was born in the Bronx, New York to Catherine and Francis Chillingworth, and was the youngest of eight sisters and immediate older brother, Thomas. After their father died in 1936, the Chillingworths moved to a beloved home on Newbold Ave. along with oldest sister Kay Cumming and her children Reginald and Patricia. Years later they moved to Bay Ridge where her sister Louise Hodgins' family lived. Diane attended Hunter College, but postponed her education to work in publishing for Street & Smith (Conde Nast), and Reader's Digest. She was fond of dogs, warm woolen sweaters, skiing and hiking. While working, Diane returned to Hunter to earn her BA in English by 1965. She taught at Brookside School in Allendale, NJ near the home of her sister, Ruth. Mutual friends, Shirley and Fred Palmer introduced her to Thomas Gould, whom she married on Friday, June 13, 1969. Shortly after their daughter Georgianna was born, Diane had a multiple sclerosis (MS) attack. The Gould family moved briefly to Alhambra, CA, and then to Ramsey, NJ, where they resided for 34 years. A second MS attack in 1973 rendered Diane unable to drive, but with her yellow adult tricycle she volunteered for years at the Ramsey Public Library and for Literacy Volunteers of America. Diane always put others before herself. She was a loving wife and mother who avidly supported American Association of University Women and National Organization for Women. Diane and Tom retired to Carlisle, PA, where Diane volunteered at the gift shop. Their last move was to San Antonio to watch granddaughter Josephine grow up. After Tom died, Diane became wheelchair-bound, yet she volunteered for Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. Diane's love, beauty, charm, and great sense of humor will be sorely missed.
