Lillian Bartholf Obituary



BARTHOLF
Lillian E. (Varian), of Closter, daughter of the late Elliott F. Varian and Lillian E. Logan, passed away on January 25, 2013. She was born on April 1, 1926 in Union City, New Jersey and was a descendant of some of the earliest families to settle in New York City and Scarsdale, New York. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband Howard C. Bartholf, and her loving brother George E. Varian.
Mrs. Bartholf grew up in Cresskill and was a 1944 graduate of Tenafly High School. During World War II she worked for the Home Insurance Company in New York City. After marrying her husband, Howard, in May 1946, she raised her family in Bergenfield before moving to Closter in 1954. She would later work for the Closter School system as a teacher's aide and assistant at Hillside school until her retirement. As she raised her children, she took an active part in both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Closter.
Mrs. Bartholf is survived by her son Howard E. Bartholf and wife Janet of Richmond, Virginia; and daughters Linda E. Grieco and husband Richard of Cameron Park, California; Barbara A. Kohlberger and husband Peter of Warwick, New York; and Jeanne E. Martin and husband Clifford of Haworth. She is also survived by her loving sister Dorothy Gillespie of Old Tappan, and close cousin Rosemarie Bruning of Cresskill, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was a loving grandmother to Stephen, Ryan, and Scott, Richard and Russell, Lisa and Laura, Clifford and Kathryn, Robert, Brian, Timothy, and Paul, as well as 15 great- grandchildren.
Special thanks to the staff of CareOne at Valley, Community Hospice, nieces Donna Rivera and Margaret Gillespie, close friends Edith Preiss, and Kurt and Lisa Vreeland, for the loving care they rendered.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Moritz Funeral Home, Closter. Visitation Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral service, Tuesday 10:30 AM at the First Congregational Church, Haworth, with interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pascack Valley Meals on Wheels, 100 Madison Ave., Suite 3, Westwood, NJ 07675.
