ABBA BAYER

BAYER--Abba, 98, passed peacefully at home on May 17. Born in New York City, he graduated DeWitt Clinton High School and was co-editor of the magazine, Magpie. He enlisted at age 19, became a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, and served in the Pacific. As an engineer with the 345 bomb group he received eight Battle stars. Abba graduated Columbia University. In 1952 he married Eileen Schlesinger, his wife of 70 years. Since 1954 Abba was a coffee trader, broker and President of James W. Phyfe & Co. He was a Director of The Green Coffee Association for eight terms and a passionate "Coffee Man." Abba's wife, Eileen, was the love of his life. His two other joys were his daughters, Patty Bayer Troup and Elizabeth (1957-2007). Donations can be made to plant trees in Israel at The Jewish National Fund (jnf.org).
