At his request, no formal services will be held for former Coquille resident Burton E. Forbes, 78, of Sutherlin. Friends paid their respects on March 29 at Taylor's Family Chapel in Winston.
He was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Blue Earth, Minn., son of Charles and Grace (Minor) Forbes. He died March 25, 2005, in Eugene.
At an early age, he moved with his family to Redondo Beach, Calif., where he was raised and educated. During World War II, Burton entered the U.S. Navy to serve our country. He later served in the Merchant Marines. In 1945, after the war, he moved to Oregon and settled in Coquille in 1955. He owned and operated a dairy farm for 25 years and later owned and operated a trucking business. Burton was a former director for the Bandon Cheese Plant and was a member of the Coos County Farm Bureau, as well as the Oregon Cattleman's Association. He also volunteered on the Coquille Ambulance.
He met Charlotte Miller and they were united in marriage on April 18, 1984, in Carson City, Nev. They moved to Christmas Valley, where they owned and ran the Lakeside Terrace Motel and Restaurant. When they retired, they moved to Lakeside and later to Sutherlin. He and Charlotte enjoyed fishing trips and would go wherever they thought fishing was good.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Sutherlin; three children, Peggy Cook and David Forbes and his wife, Terri, all of Coquille, and Rita Jane Hoover and her husband, Barry, of Arago.
