EDWARD PHILLIPS Obituary

PHILLIPS--Edward Paul. In Memory of Phillips-Edward Paul, 66, Tax Attorney of Boca Raton and native Floridian born in Miami Beach, son of Dr. Herman Phillips and Hana Gininger "Ginny" Phillips, died on June 3, 2011. Graduate of the UF College of Law (J.D.) and NYU's Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.), former IRS Trial Attorney, author of Florida Taxation Review ('80-'98), Assistant Professor of Taxation at Florida's FAU ('82-'89) and FIU ('79-'82) and Lecturer for the FICPA ('80-'98) and a U.S. Marine. Ed served his clients with expertise, compassion and humor. He loved the law and chose his career at the age of nine, drafting his first contract, an agreement with his dad and brother to paint the "gray-room and kitchen... by Saturday." As tax attorney, Ed was always there for his clients except during his daily exercise rituals, swimming or running which he undertook faithfully throughout his life. Although, he maintained an abstemiously healthy lifestyle, his luck ran out when he contracted a virus in August 2007 eventually requiring a heart transplant in 2008. Unwilling to slow down, Ed continued to practice law and despite taking immunosuppressants, traveled to Beijing, China to hike The Great Wall on Thanksgiving Day 2010 with his son Benjamin. Edward is survived by his wife Carole Phillips of Boca Raton; his sons Benjamin and Stephen, sister Judith Phillips Lichtenstein of New York City and brother Charles Phillips, M.D., of Stuart, FL. Edward is greatly missed. Those who loved him feel a great loss as his playful, brilliant wit and disarming smile are absent from our lives.
