HENRIETTA HARRISON Obituary

HARRISON--Henrietta,

died October 28th at home in the embrace of her husband, from a rare form of cancer. She was 69 years old. Ms. Harrison is remembered for her talents as a Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Westport, Connecticut for more than 20 years, beginning in 1994. Having worked with hundreds of individuals, couples and families through the years, her special interest was working with couples. She has been credited by many clients with saving troubled marriages and helping divorcing couples maintain the good will necessary for constructive co- parenting following divorce. Notably, Ms. Harrison was also known as "the therapist to therapists" as many professionals in her field sought her out for assistance with problems in their own lives. In addition to her work through the years as a Marriage and Family Therapist, Ms. Harrison is remembered as an Executive Coach and Business Consultant. Prior to her career in psychotherapy, during the 1970's and 1980's Ms. Harrison was a pioneer in the advancement of Equal Opportunity in Employment for Women. She was an early advocate for Equal Employment Opportunity programs for women in Fortune 500 Companies. She was the architect and driving force behind many such programs both as a Human Resources Consultant for New York based Organization Resources Counselors and as a pro bono consultant with the New York City Equal Employment Opportunity Commission working directly with Commissioner Eleanor Holmes Norton. Similarly, she was the protege of Felice Schwartz, founder and CEO of Catalyst, a non-profit group which pioneered flexible work arrangements for women balancing career and family. Ms. Harrison is remembered by the Greens Farms Academy community in Greens Farms, Connecticut for her tireless efforts on behalf of the school during the 15 years her sons attended the school. Her sons Alexander and Zachary, were each students at the school from Kindergarten through 12th Grade, graduating as Class Salutatorian in 1998 and Class Valedictorian in 2000, respectively. Ms. Harrison was an active participant in and chaired many events and activities at Greens Farms Academy through the years including the Learning to Look art appreciation program, chairing the school wide Book Fair for a record setting year, and conducting numerous after school courses facilitating pursuit of non-academic interests among the student body. In addition to being generous financial contributors to the school, with her husband, Marshall, she successfully co-captained their grade's Capital Campaign in the 1980s. Henrietta and Marshall Harrison were married in 1968 and during their marriage lived in New York City, Chicago, England and most recently, Fairfield, CT. Marshall Harrison is the Founder and CEO of Imperium, industry leader in data quality and fraud prevention. Ms. Harrison is survived by her husband, Marshall, and their son Zachary of Boston, MA. Their first child, Alexander, died last June of a heart attack. She is also survived by her brother Mark Irgang. Her parents Helen and Ben Irgang are deceased. She was an avid traveler with a lifelong affinity for country life and all things European.

Henrietta was the love of my life and my best friend.  Through our 47 years together I learned to be a better person and a good husband.  I hope I deserved her.   I celebrate her life and give thanks that her pain and suffering are at an end.  Henrietta shall live in my heart forever.

I am saddened to hear of your loss of Henrietta. The passing of many years has not diminished my memory of her graciousness and the fun we had together during your Chicago years. May your memories of the 47 wonderful, loving years together provide you some solace.

Henrietta was with Marshall a most lovely and dear friend for forty years. Her enjoyment and appreciation of life which enriched all who came across her was interspersed with an unusual wisdom, always bestowed with charm that could only come from a truly loving heart. And so she had that magical gift of helping others and bringing out the best in those around her. We will miss her very greatly.

I can well recall today a dinner of forty years back, when she cooked most delicious goulash and of course the other courses had to be Hungarian too - Marshall produced wines to match and the music was Hungarian as well! All was accompanied by much Harrison laughter. We will treasure many memories and their great friendship for ever as well as that of Alexander and Zachery. Our hearts go out to Marshall and Zachery. She and Alexander will be dearly missed - we loved her enormously and will be planting a tree on the South Downs this fall in her memory.

Henrietta immediately made me feel quite comfortable and at ease the first time I met her. I´m quite sure she had this effect on most everyone she knew. As a mother of young children and wife, I have such admiration for Henrietta´s accomplishments both at home and professionally. A long, happy marriage, raising two sons and running her own successful practice she certainly has left a beautiful mark on this world. My thoughts and prayers are with Marshall and Zachary.

Where to begin? My association with the Harrison family is more valued than it is lengthy and it goes back a long way. You have always been a valued family and the kind of friends one doesn't see nearly enough, but always has a special place for. I am so sorry for your and our loss. Lynn joins in sending condolences and hugs to you, Marshall, and to you, Zach!

Marshall, Zachary and Alexander I am so sorry to hear about your loss.
I met Henrietta at the Learning Center and connected with her immediately. We shared our professional goals as well as our personal lives. I had the good fortune to not only be a colleague of hers, but to have her as a friend. While I lived in Westport, we shared many pleasant lunches together....sharing stories of our love and pride in our children and our love and respect for our husbands.
My husband Joe and I were honored to be invited to a bar mitzvah for....sorry forgot if it was for Alexander or Zachary....what a wonderful event!
We moved to CA 15 years ago and to my surprise while she was visiting my city of Santa Cruz, she took the time to lunch with me, which I was and still am grateful.
I always admired her strength, ambition and love of her family.
She will be missed.

As my childhood best friend's mother, Henrietta was my mom away from home. I'll always remember her warmth and total devotion to Alexander, Zachary and Marshall. I was also a lucky recipient of her kindness during the countless days and nights I spent in their home.

I was always struck by Henrietta's poise and dignity. Her intellect and empathy made her a revered matriarch among her family, and a respected practitioner among her clients. I'll always admire her great personal strength that I saw throughout both happy and trying times of her life.

My thoughts are with Marshall and Zachary, for whom Henrietta was the rock of their lives. Henrietta devoted her life to helping people, and I know you were among her favorite subjects.

Our whole family was very sorry to hear the news that Henrietta had passed away. Henrietta was a very special person, and we will miss her intelligence, warm-heartedness and sense of humor. Henrietta was a devoted mother, and she cherished her family.

I have fond memories of working with her on the Greens Farm Academy Book Fair and other school activities. At GFA and Dartmouth, we watched our kids grow up together and mature into men. We had so much to share that we could talk for hours.

We will miss her and you have our deepest condolences.

Do know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and Zach. I do remember Henrietta always sharing a thought or two to make life at GFA the best it could be. I had a good rapport with the students, but it was "input" such as Henrietta supplied (as well as the other 3 of the Harrison family) that allowed me to make GFA a home-away-from-home!

I worked with Henrietta at The New Learning Center. She was a gifted psychotherapist, and a kind, caring person. I have lived out of Ct. for many years, and was unaware of her illness. She will be remembered by many as one of the special people. My sympathy to the family. Joan Srager

It wasn't just that mil- wide radiant smile that we all loved. It was also the twinkle in her eye that went with it, a twinkle that suggested a shared secret or joke that only she and the person she was looking at knew. What wasn't a joke was her devotion to her family and her commitment to her work. We were friends for many years and her passing at this young age is so sad. You and Zachary have had more sorrow this year than any family should have to bear. My heart goes out to you both. May you be comforted by your memories of happier times.

When my wife and I ran into problems with our marriage, we talked with several psychotherapists, but none of them could help us find our way through the problems. When we talked with Henrietta, she immediately found a path that worked. We have just celebrated our 51st anniversary, and I am certain we would not have gotten there without he help. God bless her. We owe her a lot....

Thank you for sharing this, I am very sad to learn of her passing but glad to learn a bit more about her life and contributions as in a professional setting you don't always know these aspects. I hadn't seen her in many years but remember her as insightful and warm and very helpful at the time I knew her. My sincere condolences to the family.

I had the pleasure of training Henrietta in the gym at FAST fitness in Westport for two years. It was a pleasure to work with her and push her to reach her personal fitness goals and encourage her to be strong. We shared stories in the gym of everyday life struggles and joys. She shared with me some of the hardest life experiences I had at the time. As much as I was helping her find strength, she helped me do the same, even on days she didn't feel strong. It was a mutual benefit. I always enjoyed working with her. When I left the gym to pursue my education further, she offered encouraging words and wished me the best, even though our journey together would be ending... I hope she is able to find peace. I hope her family knows the lives Henrietta encountered in all facets of life in all sorts of magnitudes. Even the smallest encountered have huge impacts. She will be missed... ??????

Henrietta was an inspiration to me as I started my private practice over 10 years ago. She was one of a few therapists with a digital presence and her website was lovely! It showed off her warmth and love of her job, something I strived to do with my own. We both served on the Advisory Board of the MFT program at Fairfield University where her calm and wisdom impacted our discussions. Henrietta you will be missed!

"Best mom ever." It's a common line on coffee mugs and Mother's Day cards but I always knew it was true for my brother and me. My mom always told me she would love me no matter what and be there for me in any situation. Most people dont find themselves in critical situations where that unconditional love is tested and luckily I never did. However through more routine difficulties with my friends or school or my brother my mom was always there for me with grounded advice and love. My familiy's household growing up was often dominated by the loud and assertive Harrison men and my mom was routinely the voice of reason and calmness that was needed to diffuse a political argument or decide what movie to go see together. She always thought of our interests and preferences and put what would be best for our family ahead of any personal preference. Most of the time she would just go with the flow with us...watching countless action movies and listening to "techy" discussions my father and I could get into about computers or technology in general. Always the supportive mother she found a way to participate in discussions and activities that didnt suit her as well or found ways to let us have male bonding times.

Like most sons I looked up to my father more as a role model because we have more in common and share more interests. But men have unique relationships with their mothers too and I could not have asked for a better mom or a better relationship with her. She encouraged my limited interest and ability in cooking as I grew up and was always the right counterbalance to discussions and interests that my brother and father and I shared as men. After being a fulltime homemaker and raising my brother and me my mom went back to school to continue her education and open a Psychotherapy practice. This path she took provided many opportunities for me to learn about developing yourself as an adult and a window into the previously unknown world of the mental health field. She was an exemplary role model as a mother and helped make a home environment that was very conducive to my development and education as I grew up. I truly am the man I am today because of her influence and love. Hearing her say she was proud of me and the man I had become as I matured always brought a huge smile to my face and made me feel comfortable and confident about who I am.

I'll remember holding her hand walking through Times Square for the first time as a child. I'll remember her huge smile and excitement at seeing me at summer camp visiting day and when I returned home after two months. I'll remember her encouraging me to perform my saxophone in my middle school talent show...and beaming with pride after I did. I'll remember her immense pride and happiness for me when I graduated High School, College and then landed a job and moved to Boston to live with my brother. I'll remember all the great homecooked meals I'd look forward to when visiting home...and the homecooked brisket all wrapped up for transport back to Boston to enjoy in the weeks following each visit. I'd look forward to telling her how much I enjoyed each portion because I could tell how much she liked doing that for us..and I looked forward to each portion.

While she was taken too early from us my mom lived a full life touching and influencing the lives of many others and always in a positive way. She was as caring and supportive as anyone could want from their mom. Raising two sons and being married for nearly 50 years she was an outstanding role model and constant source of positive examples and behavior in my life and her many life lessons and love will always be with me.

I really did have the best mom ever.

Love,
Z

Prashant let me know of Henrietta's passing this morning. I remember Henrietta joining us on our office lunches/dinners. She had a unique way of engaging us in probing, playful discussions which made our business outings deep and light at the same time - she was a special lady :) I'm not a big prayer person, but I do hope that the many years of love and laughter that you and Henrietta shared will support you during this very difficult time.
