IRIS APFEL

APFEL--Iris Barrel. The Trustees and staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art mourn the passing of Benefactor and style icon Iris Barrel Apfel. Her unique and exuberant personal style was matched by her enthusiasm for supporting fashion and the arts. Mrs. Apfel's contributions to the industry were celebrated in The Met's 2005 exhibition "Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection," which showcased her collection and wardrobe as she originally wore and styled her pieces. She and her husband Carl were longtime supporters of The Met's Costume Institute, and Mrs. Apfel was elected Benefactor in 1997. In recognition of their generosity, The Carl and Iris Barrel Apfel Gallery was named in their honor.
