One of the kindest, brightest person I've ever had the pleasure to know, and most respectful. I had the pleasure to be his patient for 40 years. They don't make doctors like him today. Truly one-of-a-kind guy. What a "Mensch"
Your dearly missed.

I worked closely with Dr Walsh in clinic and he was wonderful!!! I have many fond memories of him...and remember laughing and giggling daily due to his endless sense of humor! He also had a great love for animals especially his dog....he sent me home early after we saw patients one day to find my escapee ferret that went out into the forest....he said, "Go home and find the child!" I just loved him so much...he was such a great man, scholar, leader, physician and friend! He will be missed!

As I grow older and encounter other physicians who are treating me for various eye ailments, it becomes painfully clear how special Joe Walsh was and how much he is missed.

Dr. Joseph Walsh was a mentor and friend since my ophthalmology residency at Montefiore, and he was like no other. He was a resource of wisdom and knowledge, and loved ophthalmology and science. He tried to retire for a long time, but did not really want to. Even now he continues to teach new generations of doctors through the activites of those who he had thought.

So much to say... truly a pillar of the NYEEI, a teacher, a gentleman, a reminder why one dedicates his life caring for his fellow man-in good times and in bad, and a wit that would make us laugh when we needed it the most. God rest his soul and he will be missed. I offer my sympathies and prayers to his family and friends.
Sincerely,

I remember Dr Walsh and the most unassuming, kind, knowledgeable and approachable Chairman and faculty asset of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He consistently struck me for his charisma of relating to people of every king with a grace and humor which has no peer. He will always be in my heart with a special place.
My sympathies to his family and loved ones,

Joe Walsh was one of my closest friends during our teenage years at Troy High School. I was so proud of his later accomplishments in medicine. It's sad to think of his loss.

I am heartbroken..Joe has been my doctor since I was 17 years old and I am now 54..when he saw that my retina was detaching, he brought me upstairs literally and waited for me to meet my surgeon. When the surgery was done on Thanksgiving day, he instructed my surgeon to call him and let him know how it went..when my surgeon said "are you sure? on Thanksgiving?" Joe said yes. I loved this man and only am comforted by the fact that he is at peace and not in pain anymore. The world lost the best doctor in the world.

I've been a diabetic for 53 years and Dr. Walsh was ophthalmologist for 38 of those years. When my endocrinologist said I needed and ophthalmologist he said there's only one guy in New York that he would send me to Joe Walsh. I remember it like was yesterday. He is the finest doctor I've had the pleasure to know. His kindness, honesty, humbleness, sense of humor, passion for his work, sincerity and caring for his patients. He listened and never forgot anything you said, unbelievable mind. My mother was also a patient of his and after her death he sent me a condolence card telling me what a lovely person my mother was and I hadn't told him about a death, but he read it in the New York Times.
If I told her my back hurt he would check it. If I needed an orthopedic doctor he gave me a name, he was such a busy guy but he would never let you down and always try to help. My wife had cataract surgery in December 2016 and a growth appeared January in 2017 and she was referred to an ocular oncologists who we didn't know. So as I've always done I emailed Dr. Walsh and ask him if you could refer someone and as usual he did. The only problem was he was suffering the acute effects of his disease and hardly able to speak but he called me anyway to try to help me. What else can you say about a guy like this.
I only wish the best to his family and friends because a guy like this doesn't come along very often. I'm so sorry for his loss. We have truly lost a remarkable guy.
Rest in peace.
Jennifer

I've lived in the same building as Dr. Walsh for 13 years. He was always incredibly friendly and I always enjoyed riding the elevator with him and chatting about all kinds of things--and most particularly our dogs. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

I will never forget Dr. Walsh's kindness to me: as my physician of many years in New York, he was always available, always understanding, forever humorous and completely honest. We were always discussing other things, and the breadth of his knowledge of my discipline, music, was inspiring...I always made him late because we talked so much. He visited me moments before surgery to make sure I was ok, and kept in touch afterwards. I will never forget him.
