Margaret DeLaCour Obituary

DeLaCOUR--Margaret J. 63, of Brooklyn Heights and Glen Cove, New York died on Monday, February 18th, after a sudden illness on board the cruise ship Corinthian II, upon her return from a trip to Antarctica with the New York Yacht Club. Beloved wife of Willis S. DeLaCour Jr., mother of Dirk, Russell and Sophie, daughter of Bertha K. Jones and brother of David R. Jones, Peggy was born to Justice and Mrs. Thomas R. Jones in 1944. Raised in Bedford Stuyvesant, she attended Hunter High School and the University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with a degree in History in 1966. She later attended Columbia University as a graduate student in Chinese studies, and received her MA in Public Administration from NYU in 1984. In her long career, she served in a number of senior level positions in New York City government, at the Department of Environmental Protection, the NYC Water Board and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office. Throughout her life she followed her pursuits with intensity, inspired by a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge. She served on a number of nonprofit Boards, including The Junior League of Brooklyn, Colony South Brooklyn, Grace Church School and the Planting Field Arboretum of Oyster Bay. She and her husband, Wids also supported numerous organizations dedicated to providing educational and outdoor opportunities for New York City children. Peggy was an avid traveler and a passionate gardener who appreciated every detail of life. She will be missed by all and remembered for her devotion to family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Grace Church on Saturday, March 15, at 4:00pm, located at 254 Hicks St., in Brooklyn Heights. The family prefers in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 1000 Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11225 or to the Planting Field Arboretum, Planting Field Foundation, PO Box 660, Oyster Bay, NY 11771.

My cousin's passion for and proficiency in the study of Chinese culture and language was legendary in our family and a great source of pride to our grandmother. Peggy nurtured people, plants, and countless essential causes with exceptional devotion, strength, and skill. Separated from her by geography for far too many years, I had only to meet my cousin, her wonderful husband, and their extraordinary children to understand, and utterly to marvel at, how gracefully, gently, and lovingly Margaret Jones DeLaCour used her all-too-short time here to make this world a far better place.

I don't remember a time when I didn't know Peggy. Her door was always open to me--to use her encyclopedias for homework, to play with baby Sophie, or just to chat. She was the mom next door. State Street doesn't seem quite like home anymore.
