NEIL E. HARLAN

HARLAN--Neil Eugene, 92 years, of Admirals Way, died January 9, 2014, following a period of declining health, at Huntington Commons in Kennebunk. Neil was born June 2, 1921 in Cherry Valley, Arkansas a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Harlan. After graduating from public schools there, he graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and earned his MBA (1950) and DBA (1956) from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Harlan also attended the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1946. In 1969 was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Arkansas and in 1981 another doctorate from Golden Gate University. Mr. Harlan proudly served his country in the US Army during WW II. He served as Platoon Leader, Company Commander and Battalion Commander of the 8th Armored Division, through the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central European campaigns. He received an honorable discharge in September 1946 with the rank of Captain. On September 27, 1952 he married Anna Marta (Martha) Almlov of Melrose, Massachusetts. Mr. Harlan's career was long and varied. In 1951, Mr. Harlan was appointed to the faculty of the Harvard Business School where he served as full professor until 1962, when he was appointed the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force by President John F. Kennedy. From 1964 until 1967 he worked at Anderson, Clayton & Company, Houston, Texas in positions including Financial Vice President, Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors. From 1967 until 1974 he was a Director of McKinsey & Company. And from 1974 until 1993, Mr. Harlan was with McKesson Corporation serving as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Director and finally as interim Chairman and CEO. Always active in the community and in the business world, Mr. Harlan served in many capacities, including the following: California Commission on Campaign Financing; Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Ballet Association; Trustee of World Affairs Council of Northern California; Board of Directors, Castle Springs, Inc.; National Advisory Board, Little Rock, Arkansas; Vice Chairman, Board of Directors of the National Park Foundation, 1985-1992; Board of Governors, San Francisco Symphony, 1985-1988; California Business Roundtable; Bay Area Council, Inc.; San Francisco Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors, Envirotech, Inc.; Board of Directors, U.S. Leasing, Inc.; and Board of Directors, Levi Strauss (1984-1985). Mr. Harlan enjoyed salmon fishing as well as playing guitar and piano. He enjoyed golf and was a member at the Webhannet Golf Club, Kennebunk and the Edgecomb Tennis Club in Kennebunk Beach. Neil is remembered and lovingly missed by his wife, Martha; his daughters, Lindsey Beth Harlan of Mystic, CT and Sarah Ellis Harlan Brown of Acton, ME; his son, Neil E. Harlan, Jr.; five grandchildren, Christopher Kingsford, Lindsey Brown, Devon Harlan Gay, Philip K. Brown, IV, and Kirin Harlan Gay; three great- grandchildren, Alissa Long, Gabriel Long and Willow Star Kingsford. Graveside services in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME will be private.
