OWEN DALY Obituary

DALY--Owen, II, died March 22, 2012 at home in Lutherville, MD. He was eighty-seven. Born September 4, 1924 in Denver, Colorado where his mother's family had lived since 1879, Owen was the only son of Dorotita O'Donnell and O. Gordon Daly. He had a sister Kathleen who died in 1936. In many ways, Owen's life would mirror that of the man he admired most, his father, who also graduated from Gilman, before rowing crew and captaining the soccer team at Harvard. Owen graduated from The Gilman School in 1943, where he played Varsity football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and lacrosse, while also serving as vice-president of his class junior and senior year. He then attended the Navy V-12 program at the University of Pennsylvania, before serving honorably as an Assistant Gunnery Officer in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he enrolled in Princeton where he majored in politics, played Varsity football, and was a member of The Ivy Club. Graduating from Princeton in the summer of 1948, Owen began a life of banking, first at the Mercantile-Safe Deposit and Trust, and later at the Equitable Trust and Equitable Bancorporation. At the Equitable, he was president and chairman from 1967 to 1982 and was a founding member of VISA International. Owen married Marian Riggs Bailliere on November 17, 1950 in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to being the longest serving trustee of Gilman School, he was president of the Board from 1969 to 1975. He was a member of the Elkridge, Maryland, and Center Clubs. A devoted Catholic, he was a Knight in the Federal Order of Malta and a parishioner at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. He was a founding director of the National Aquarium and AIM and a board member of Goucher College, St. Mary's Seminary, Provident Bank of Philadelphia mutual fund board, Cortland Trust Inc., CFI Steel Corp., Monumental Life Insurance Company, and the Monumental General Insurance Company. He is survived by his wife, Marian Riggs Bailliere, his sons, Owen Daly III, Gordon Bailliere, Clinton Riggs, Thomas O'Donnell, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Daly has requested that any donations made in his name should go to the two institutions he loved most, The Gilman School and St. Mary's Seminary. For more information on services, please visit: www.evansfuneralchapel.com
