SAMUEL MADELL

MADELL--Samuel H., 96, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, New Jersey. Born Samuel H. Mendelowitz to Abraham and Sarah Mendelowitz on January 17, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, Sam was predeceased by his former wife Marylynn Joyce Madell, sister Eva Besen, honorary brother Irving P. Baumrind and several close friends and family members. He is survived by his wife Grace M. Madell, sister Ethel Brown, sons Kenneth, Alan, Spencer, Clifford and Jaime, daughters-in-law Caro Hawthorne, Carol Wade and Negisa Balluku, and numerous grandchildren. Sam was a proud veteran of World War II, an avid golfer, a lover and patron of the arts and a giant in the medical profession. A graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he excelled in teaching, pioneered ultrasound technology and was an influential part of the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American Medical Association and the New York Roentgen Society, of which he was a past president. Sam dedicated his later years to helping doctors navigate an increasingly litigious environment, serving on the board of directors of Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company. Sam was - and remains - a vital force in the lives of those whose paths he crossed. He was a deep thinker and voracious reader with a penchant for meaningful conversation and contemplation. He was also profoundly leveled, guided by the belief that life is to be lived, love is to be shared and friendship to be cherished. Despite knowing the inevitable challenges of a 96 year-long adventure on planet Earth, Sam brought cheer and strength, dignity and honesty to every struggle. And by example he taught us that giving up is not an option, abandoning duty not a possibility, and shortcuts rarely worth taking. Relatives and friends are encouraged to donate to their charity of choice in lieu of flowers, and similar expressions of condolence.
