Helen Whatley Obituary

Helen Stites Whatley went home to her Lord and Savior on September 11, 2006. She was born November 13, 1924 to Dr. James Rodman and Helen Katterjohn Stites in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended the University of Louisville. She has resided in Opelika from 1949 until her death. Mrs. Whatley is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Dr. William Biggers Whatley, Jr.; her children, Dr. James Rodman Whatley (Nancy), Dr. William Biggers Whatley, III (Janet), Kathryn Whatley Walton all of Opelika, and Stephen Woods Whatley (Lucy) of Anniston, AL. She is also survived by her twelve beloved grandchildren: Carolyn Stites, Kirsten, Will, Mary Brunson, Stephen, Michael, Rodman, Courtney, Katie Woods, Sarah and Jack, one great grandchild Duncan and many dear friends. Mrs. Whatley was a member of the EAMC Auxiliary for more than 25 years, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1949, and a lifetime supporter of the arts. Family graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. A memorial celebration of her life will be officiated at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church by Reverends Joe Lay and Earl Ballard. Music will be presented by Mrs. Robert L. McCullough. Honorary pallbearers are Yetta G. Samford, C.C. Torbert, Jr., Crawford A. Tatum, Randy Morgan, Banks Herndon and Thomas Keeling. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church and Hospice of East Alabama.
