Jean Yarborough Obituary

Jean Yarborough

Tupelo- Dorothy Jean Yarborough, 89, died peacefully on January 21, 2025, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born in Corinth on July 19, 1935. She is the daughter of William Russell and Louise Russell Horton. Following her high school graduation, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Mississippi State College for Women. Jean began her professional journey as a home economics teacher at Mooreville High School before transitioning to substitute teaching at Tupelo High School. Eventually, she focused on her true calling as a homemaker, dedicating her life to her family and community. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Jean’s faith guided her life and service to others.

In 1957, Jean married her beloved husband, William “Russell” Yarborough, and together they shared 66 years of marriage before his passing in 2013. The couple moved to Tupelo in 1959 for Russell’s career, where they built a life filled with love and activity. Jean was an avid tennis player and a proud member of the Junior Auxiliary of Tupelo. She found joy in playing bridge and mahjong with friends and family, as well as gardening, bird watching, sewing, and keeping an immaculate home. A talented cook, Jean’s cornbread and muffins were family favorites. Her two cherished dogs, Lola and Beau, brought her immense happiness.

Jean’s dedication to her community extended beyond her home. She was a devoted volunteer for the American Cancer Society, where she served as the memorial chairman of Lee County and was active for over 25 years with the organization. Known for her honesty, resilience, and sharp mind, Jean was a determined woman who left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Jean was survived by her daughter, Betsy Whalen and her husband, Rob, of Memphis, Tennessee; son, Rusty Yarborough of Pensacola, Florida; and granddaughter, Kat Whalen of Memphis.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Russell; mother, Louise Russell Horton; husband, Russell Yarborough; and son, William Fenner Yarborough.
