Matthew Blistan Obituary

Matthew Blistan, 94, a longtime resident of Peters Township, recently living in Strabane Woods Assisted Living Facility, South Strabane Township, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 29, 2018.

He was born February 10, 1924, in Pribylina, Czechoslovakia, a young son of Matthew and Eva Blistan; they immigrated to the United States.

His wife of 67 years, Amelia Shevchik, preceded him in death May 21, 2015.

He is survived by his children, Matthew Blistan Jr. (Mary Anne) and Sandra Gullborg (William); sisters Olga Paulovkin, Mildred Sweeney, Rose Hoover, Darlene Moschak and Natalie Gardner; brother Gerald Blistan (Patricia); grandchildren Matthew Blistan III, Rachel Blistan (Anthony Beckman), Brett Gullborg (Christine) and Evan Gullborg (Lindsey); great-grandchildren Matthew Blistan IV, Brooke Gullborg, Benjamin Gullborg, Colin Gullborg and Emma Gullborg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Blistan was a graduate of Oliver High School, Robert Morris College and Duquesne University with degrees in business administration and accounting. On December 14, 1942, he joined the U.S. Marines and served during World War II overseas in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Blistan was employed as an accountant for Tom Brown Inc. and General Concrete Corp., until his retirement.

He was a lifelong member of Holy Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Pittsburgh's North Side, where he was financial secretary for many years. He had a passion for bowling, golf, hunting and fishing, but mostly loved the fellowship involved.

He was a longstanding and active member of several fraternal organizations, including Sokol USA, United Lutheran Society and GBU Financial Life. He served as fraternal secretary of ULS Assembly 272, financial secretary of Sokol Lodge 276 and president for Sokol District MCT, all for many years. He was a mason with the Syria Shriners and one of the first members of the 56-year-old friendship club called Efesee Lodge in Hammersley Fork. He was a member of Bethel Park Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Matt Blistan was an icon in our Slovak community and gave a personal touch, with a laugh or a smile with everything he did. He always gave that Matt 'touch'. Whenever we think of Matt, we think of our Slovak church and Sokols, to which he gave so much of his time and effort. How lucky we were to have him in our lives for guidance and joy.
