MAYNARD - David R. Hurd, 88, of Oelwein and formerly of Maynard, died Monday morning, Aug. 10, 2015 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette.
His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard with the Rev. Dennis Frank officiating. Interment will be in Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard, with military honors conducted by Lundbye-Carpenter American Legion Post 245 Honor Guard of Maynard.
Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and after 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

David Royal Hurd was born Aug. 9, 1927 at Maynard, Iowa the son of Harold W. and Nodah (Cue) Hurd. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1944 at the age of 16. David was employed at John Deere in Waterloo building transmissions for military tanks. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. He graduated from the University of Upper Iowa in 1955 with a degree in political science. In 1957 he took over the family farm west of Maynard when his father passed away. After retirement he moved to Oelwein. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Lundbye Carpenter American Legion Post 245 of Maynard.
David is survived by his brother Lawrence Hurd of Westgate; 2 sisters, La Rayne (Raymond) Mills of Maynard and Brenda Earles of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and 9 nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law Maurice and Irene (Benneke) Hurd; brother-in-law Len Earles; sister-in-law Shirley (Lockard) Hurd; niece Jenny (Earles) Smith; and a nephew Jim Hurd.
