Jonathan Long Obituary
RANDOLPH -- Jonathan "Russ" Long, 51, passed away August 15, 2013.
Russ was born and raised in Akron, graduated from East High and served his community as an Akron police officer. Following a life-changing accident, Russ and his mother moved to Randolph 11 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Long. He is survived by his daughters, Valerie and Jessica; son, Kurt; mother, Barbara Long of Randolph; sisters, Elaine Markey of Minnesota, Janice Kelly of Randolph and Beth (Joe) Ferrante of Strongsville; brothers, Dan (Ruth) Long of Delroy, Phil (Deena) Long of Massillon, John Long of Cleveland and Jim Long of Hilliard.
The family would like to thank all who have helped care for Russ the past several months. A special thanks to his dear friends, Frank and Diane Martucci, who have been so helpful.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle) with Rev. Bob Denton officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Randolph.
Visitation will be 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations, may be made to the Furnace Street Mission, 150 Furnace St., Akron, OH 44304 or Haven of Rest Ministries, P.O. Box 547, Akron, OH 44309

Mrs. Long ~ You were our mail lady for many years on Meade Avenue in Ellet. My mother was Jean Kennedy, over the years you became a very good friend of hers and she often spoke of you and trusted in the friendship you both shared. Unfortunely she passed away suddenly at the age of 49, I am the same age as Russ. I not only want to express my condolences of the loss of your son, but to say "Thank You" for being a friend to my Mother when she needed a friend. God Bless you!

We offer our prayers of comfort to your family at this sad time. Like so many other East High kids, Russ found fulfillment in service to his community. We were all fortunate to have some one like Russ touch our lives. We are all diminished by his loss. May his memory be eternal.

Mrs. Long & family,
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your son Russ. As many people have written, he was a hero for so many people - his family, his family in Blue and his East High School family. I hope you find some comfort in knowing that the loving care you gave Russ also makes you a hero; not only to your son, but to your children, your grandchildren and to so many mothers and fathers who can't possibly imagine what it has been like for you for so many years. May all of the good memories you have of Russ stay with you always.

To Russ's family, I am so, so sorry for your loss. I went to school with Russ, he was so nice, funny and popular. I consider myself lucky to have been one of his friends. I was so upset when I heard of Russ's accident and prayed for him every day. I ran into Russ and his mom several times, but the first time I had not seen him in many years and was amazed that he still remembered me. Each time I ran into them he always knew who I was. I was out of town and just learned of Russ's passing. Russ will be missed by many. He was a true inspiration to anyone lucky enough to know him. Dear Long family, I am so sorry for your loss. I was friends with Russ in Jr High and high school. He was caring, thoughtful, intelligent, polite with a quiet sense of humor at that age. We all knew he would grow up to be the kind of man we have been reading about in the Beacon all these years.

I worked with Russ over 30 years ago and have never forgotten him. Even back then he showed himself to be of high quality with much potential. God bless you Barbara and the rest of Russ's family.

I've known Russ for 43 of my 51 years. He was an honorable man, which was so evident at the beautiful service today. Dearest Long family, I pray for the God of all comfort to grant you the peace that can only come from Him.
