Richard Craig Obituary

Richard B. Craig, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at Kent State University, died on Feb. 1, 2013, of complications from leukemia.

He is survived by his former wife, Christel, their son, Stefan (Christine), four grandchildren, (Wil, Elizabeth, Ana, and Ava); his wife of 29 years, Deborah, and their three children, Meredith (Matthew), Armand, and Morgan.

Born on January 28, 1935, in Blytheville, Arkansas, and raised in Blytheville, Hermosa Beach, California, and Dexter, Missouri, Dick attended the University of Missouri-Columbia on an athletic scholarship. He received his B.A. in Political Science in 1958. He then joined the Army, serving two years in Germany and four more years in the Army Reserve. Dick returned to the University of Missouri where he received his M.A. in 1963. He then taught social studies and Spanish at Salisbury (Missouri) High School for two years before returning to the University of Missouri to earn his Ph.D. in 1970. His dissertation was published in book form as The Bracero Program: Interest Groups and Foreign Policy.

Dick joined the Kent State faculty in 1969, and his passion for teaching was evident to his students and colleagues. He received the Kent State Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987 and the Distinguished Honors Faculty Award in 2006. He retired in 2000 but continued to teach Latin American Politics and U.S.-Latin American Relations for another 12 years, even as his health began to decline.

Dick's research focus was narcotics trafficking, and he was often asked to testify before governmental committees and agencies, both in the United States and in Latin America. He spent one summer riding with the U.S. Border Patrol along the U.S.-Mexico border.

One of Dick's greatest joys was serving as the director of the Kent in Mexico Program, first in Cholula, Puebla, from 1973-1976 and then in Jalapa, Veracruz, from 1977-1980, during which life-long friendships were made. Another joy, some might say obsession, was sports. Not only was he knowledgeable about sports and athletes, he was often the one yelling the loudest, whether attending one of his children's sporting events or, in particular, a Kent State basketball game.

A memorial service will be held in the Kiva of the Kent State University Student Center at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the McDowell Cancer Center of Akron General Medical Center, 224 W. Exchange St., Suite 180, Akron, Ohio 44302.

I must write the same sentiment every year, but I don't think a month goes by that I don't think about Dick. My office mate while I was finishing my dissertation and teaching at Kent State, his humor and wisdom kept me on pace to finish. I watched him deal with life's challenges with aplomb and speak so glowingly and lovingly of his family. As I complete my academic career, I am grateful to have had a friend who mentored me with such selflessness. I miss you Dick.

I was thinking of Dick just a few weeks ago when I learned a friend was diagnosed with leukemia. Knowing Dicks' perseverance, I assured him that there was hope--something Dick always exuded. I miss my friend and office mate.

The anniversary of Dick's passing arrives in my inbox each year and I can't but think fondly of a good friend who helped me navigate my time as a VAP at Kent State. A kind soul and a brilliant person who cared about his students. Rest peacefully Dick

Dick and I shared an office at Kent State during the latter years of his career. He was a kind and generous person with a great sense of humor. And an old-school academic. He cared about his students and colleagues deeply and was so very helpful to me as I struggled to complete my dissertation and land a job. We need more Dick Craig's--people who care. I miss his wisdom deeply.

Oh dear, I just learned of Dick's death, and I am so saddened. He was my professor when I was an undergraduate, and I went on the first Mexico trip to Xalapa, Vera Cruz as a study abroad student. He inspired me for life, and I went on to study Anthropology and Latin American Studies with Olaf Prufer at Kent, and later for my PHD at the U of Florida. Richard Craig was a wonderful person and a fantastic teacher, and all my sympathies go to his family and friends. Andale, Ricardo!

From 2002 until 2007, I served as an adjunct in the political science department at KSU and shared an office with Dick for several years. He was generous with his time and advice with me and mentored me in myriad ways. During a time when I struggled to finish my dissertation, Dick was always there with an encouraging word and a funny story, keeping me sane until I finally finished. I saw him struggle with his illness, but he did so with immense courage and good humor. I am terribly sorry for your loss. Dick will be missed by many beyond your family. He was a truly great person.
