JOHN KEATING Obituary

November 23, 1921 - July 27, 2014 OKLAHOMA CITY John was born in Huxton, Colorado, to Grace Work Keating and Francis Joseph Keating. He spent his formative years in Loveland, Colorado. He graduated from Woodbury College, Los Angeles, California, in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy ten days later and was assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence. He was recommended for Officers Training and studied engineering at Colorado College in Colorado Springs and later reassigned to the University of Oklahoma NROTC. In May of 1945, he graduated with a degree in Naval Science and received his commission. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Curtis and served in the Pacific during World War II. On January 1, 1958, John founded Topographic Engineering Company in Duncan, Oklahoma. He used the emerging availability of aerial photography as the basis for offering additional land surveying services to the oil and gas industry. Under John's leadership Topographic became a leader in the use of surveying and mapping technology. John never retired from Topographic and proudly enjoyed working there until June 6, 2014, the day he was admitted to the hospital with his medical problem. John was named a Pathmaker in 1999 by the Oklahoma County Historical Society. John's life was documented by Bob Burke and Kate Seney in the book, "Beyond Metes & Bounds - The Life of John Keating." The book was published by The Oklahoma Heritage Association and released in 2008. John was an ordained Presbyterian Church Elder. He was a Member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a longtime member of The Economic Club, the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, and OU Associates. In 2012, he enjoyed an Oklahoma Honor Flight for World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. He was a kind and generous man who loved his family. The following quote describes well his outlook on life, "I have been truly blessed with an outstanding family, good health, sound mind, and the opportunity to build a successful business. But my most prized possession is the love of my family." John loved dancing to big band music and was a regular at the Saturday dances at Ingrid's. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tom Wheeler; and siblings, Joseph Keating, Paul Keating, and Margaret Hartman. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; daughter, Janie Cole and husband Don; son, Robert Keating and wife Sharon; son, Jim Keating and wife Rosemary; son, Bill Keating and wife Kelly; daughter, Carolyn Jenkins and husband Dennis; and son, Gordon Keating and wife Stacy. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers who provided loving care on John's last days. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 North Shartel. Memorials to Westminster Church or the charity of your choice.

Today I called to wish all our friends from Topographic Merry Christmas, and I found that Mr. Keating passed. I was so, so sorry. WHAT A GREAT MAN!
We are privileged and honored that we knew him.
We keep his autobiographical book on a table in our living room, and we are proud that he mentioned us there. It came in my mind so many conversations that I had with him in places like his office at Topographic, Chinese restaurant, the sail boat, or at his Country Club.
I remember learning from him the English expression "Good for you", him taking me to see a lawyer when I needed an advice, or taking me to Oklahoma Society of Engineers and Surveyors.
I also remember some of the best Christmas Parties ever, staying with him and Mrs. Barbara at the same table, talking about places in Colorado, the beginnings of Topographic, politics or that I eat too much ice cream.
When Smaranda had the opening of her medical practice in McAlester we were so proud to have them there as our most special guests.
I was looking forward to visit Oklahoma City and to see him again... He will always be in our hearts.
With heartfelt condolences,
Smaranda and Iuri

I just got back from England, and both George and I missed the obituary in the newspaper. We became acquainted with John and his beautiful dance partner, Barbara, at Ingrids, and how we enjoyed dancing with them, sometimes even changing partners. My ,how we will miss them both on Saturdays. That was a beautiful tribute that you printed and how we enjoyed reading it. Our love to Barbara, Ellen Jayne Wheeler and George Camp

My condolences to the Keating family. I worked for John for eight years hand drafting in the 70s and 80s at Topographic. Those were the good old days. He was a great man and friend that I will never forget. He helped me through a very difficult personal time in my life. His work ethic was remarkable, always fair, kind and always in a good mood. He was that kind of guy. The world was a better place with him in it. He will be missed.

This is tough. There isn't enough room here or really enough words to describe the influence John had on my life. I know that I probably wouldn't be where I was today if it wasn't for him. He was a true gentleman and a friend. God blessed John Keating and everyone he encountered

I worked for Topographic Surveying during the summer months while attending Oklahoma State University from 2002-2004. Although I didn't work directly for Mr. Keating, when I saw him in the office, he always took time to greet me and ask how my day was going. It may not have been important to him but I appreciated every encounter. As many have expressed, it didn't take long to realize Mr. Keating was a truly great and influential man. I would also like to express my condolences and prayers to the Keating Family. God Bless!

I worked with him long enough to recognize that he was a truly good man and the father and leader of some of the best people I've ever known. Keating Dynasty says it all. I mourn the loss of another of The Greatest Generation, and my thoughts are with you Robert, Sharon, Jim, and Ralph.

Even though I met you years ago through our "Bryans", and learned even more about you through Carey's great respect and love for you during her years at Topographic, I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to become part of the Topographic "family" and witness the incredible admiration, respect and love that "your" employees feel for you. I will never forget the wonderful, long talk we had. As my son said upon learning of your passing, "a life well lived". Rest in peace, John Keating.

John and Barbara Keating have been just the finest people we have known at Deer Valley Ranch, in Colorado where their family has had a summer cottage for sixty years. We will miss John's sweet presence immensely here at the ranch.

John, next to my father you were the one man I admired most. You led by example in all aspects of your life. I will always remember your counsel, guidance and attitude towards life. You left an incredible legacy in both family and business. It's remarkable that everyone has hundreds of stories about you and every one of them are good memories. I can't even think of Ingrids without you and Barbara lighting up the dance floor. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family.

John, Thank you for being the man that you where, I will never forget the times we talked in the office. You always had a smile on your face and usually the first thing you asked me was how was my family. Because of all your hard work I have a career that I can support my family on and also have a career I can be proud of. When people ask me where I work I can say with a smile on my face I work for Topographic. You will be greatly missed.

In 1980 I responded to an add in the Daily Oklahoman...."Party Chiefs, Instrument men, tail chainmen: experience preferred but not necessary". I was out of the Air Force, looking for work in OKC prior to entering Okla St. U. I showed up for an interview....in a suit and tie....I do not believe John was impressed but I do believe he was "amused." I am sure he knew I had no clue what I was getting into...Upon conclusion of the interview, John said "start Monday"....Okay...my first day I went to the field with Charlie Taylor and John Temple....a rainy cloudy wet day in Canadian county...we had a crash course on tail chain duties in the muddy county road...(John had told me to wear jeans and boots and hang the suit)....Charlie and John had chained down the county road I drove the truck...Charlie turned the angle and we took off through that wheat field...JT said call out the Station....2 here....4 here...6 here....we got to our 1320'....JT said lets count the pins and double check our distance...say what?....what pins?....you know 2...4...6...was I supposed to pick them up?....finding chaining pins in a wheat field with 3' tall wheat is not all that easy....God Bless you John....your decision to introduce me to the profession of land surveying was a life changing, and to this day, a life influencing event. I remember that day in the spring of 1980, the first time we met...it is one of my favorite survey stories to tell...On that day, I do not think either one us knew where this was going to go. Everyday of my professional surveying life, I attempt to conduct my professional life with the integrity and honor you lived yours. Thank you John for opening a "life opportunity door" for me. You influenced my life in ways that I never conveyed to you. As I have attempted to mature, I have accepted this fact for my life...there have been no coincidences...The good Lord crossed our paths and for that I am grateful....To the Keating Family members I know personally, May the Heavenly Father be with you and bring the blessing of comfort from his eternal, Holly Spirit...Barbra, Robert, Sharon, Jim, Bill....Thank you for being the foundation that supported John's success, as a family man, a business man, and an exceptional person.... may God continue to bless you and yours...Ken & Allie Johnson, Fort Worth, Texas
