Andrew Zimmerman Obituary

Zimmerman, Andrew Scott

Age 37 of Phoenix, AZ, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2013, at the Shea Campus of Scottsdale Health Center in Scottsdale, AZ, after a courageous 7 month fight against leukemia. Andrew was born on May 21, 1976, in Bismarck, ND, to Joel and Kathleen Zimmerman. He spent time growing up in Bismarck, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Twin Falls, ID, and Omaha, NE. Andrew graduated from Millard North High School in 1994, and went on to attend Peru State College. In 1996 he married Tanya Diaz, with whom he fathered 4 wonderful children over a 13-year union. While working full-time and raising his children, Andrew earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Bellevue University in 2007. Andrew began working for PayPal in Omaha in 2002, advancing to the position of Senior Supervisor. In 2011, he transferred with PayPal to Phoenix. In 2013, he married Lori Schulenburg, his loving partner since 2011, and his advocate and constant supporter throughout his illness. Andrew was a larger than life figure who was exceedingly generous with his time and his affections. His family was the focus of his life, and he took great pleasure in sharing his passions with those close to him, including his love of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and college football, his lifetime dedication to the Chicago Cubs, his commitment to quality practical jokes, and his steadfast appreciation for firework-focused holidays. He will be remembered as a loving father, husband, son, brother, grandson, friend, and colleague. Andrew is survived by his wife Lori of Phoenix; children, Isaac, Owen, Isabelle, and Ophelia Zimmerman, Colorado Springs, CO; parents, Joel and Kathleen Zimmerman, Omaha; brother Matt Zimmerman, San Francisco, CA; and grandmother Beulah Rathe, Carrington, ND.
A Private Service was held in Omaha on September 14. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to his children's education fund at andrewmemorial.com or sent to the Andrew Zimmerman Memorial Account, c/o Matt Zimmerman, PO Box 191563, San Francisco, CA 94119.

Tanya and kids,
I was very saddened to read of Andrew's passing. You were both very good parents and Andrew was indeed a gentle father, always calm and understanding when the kids were ill or had complicated medical concerns. I shall miss him.

Our deepest sympathy to all of you. I have followed Andrews site since last spring with prayers for a miracle, Andrew always remained so positive through this illness and was always supporting those around him. Though I only had met him as a young child he was a role model for any of us on how to always remain positive through adversity. Sincerely Angi and Daryl Jensen

I only met Andrew in January 2013 when my husband and I went to Phoenix to run my first half marathon. It was then I met Andrew and also his lovely wife Lori. Andrew was so warm and kind and took me right in giving me a big hug the first night I met him!! I knew then he was a special man with a big heart...kind of that old soul feeling!! Rest in peace Andrew...you will be missed!

AZ had a personality kind of like gravity. All those that met him were just pulled to him. You will be missed. Brother, where you are the Cubs win the World Series every year. Prayers out to your family.

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?
Not what did gain, but what did he give?
There are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.

Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But, had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?

Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,
but how many were sorry when he passed away.
