Donald McEvoy Obituary

McEvoy, Donald Jerome

Donald was a great man who was a friend to all and an enemy to none. Through all his 89 years, he maintained his kind, practical, and noble attitude and outlook on life. He learned humbleness and a strong work ethic from his upbringing on the family's farm in Yutan, NE. He was the second youngest of five boys, preceded in death by his eldest brother John "Jack", and his two youngest brothers, Robert "Bob", and William "Bill". He is survived by his brother, Charles Gayle.

Don was born in Wahoo, NE on March 6, 1933 to Charles Edmund McEvoy and Mary Ann McEvoy (nee Thell). He graduated from Yutan High School in 1950. In Elementary School, he rode his horse to the one room schoolhouse, where he tied it to the bottom of the slide, irritating his classmates at recess as they were faced with an oat-munching equine blocking their way. In High School, he enjoyed playing basketball and running. He worked as a mechanic in the Army, serving in France during the Korean War. While there, he also worked at a movie theater and learned only one sentence in French: "Combien pour le chien dans la fenêtre?" (How much for the doggy in the window?). He was a proud member of the International Association of Machinists, and worked as a Machinist and an Electrician at Continental Can Company for 42 years. Don's interests included tinkering, apple juice, and effortlessly charming everyone.

In 1968, Don married his delightfully eccentric British sweetheart, Kathleen Manahan. Together, Don and Kathleen went on many adventures, frequently traveling to England to visit Kathleen's family. In 1969, Don and Kathleen welcomed their first and only child, Kevin McEvoy. In 2003, Kevin and his wife Jen welcomed Don and Kathleen's first and only grandchild, Lillian Mary. Don was preceded in death by Kathleen; and is survived by Kevin, Jen, and Lily. Don is also survived by his sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Don's wit, kindness, and charm will not be forgotten. He has had a positive impact on many and will continue to impact future generations.
