Joel B. RiceCAMDEN >> Joel B. Rice, 71, California Road, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 16, 2018, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.Born in Oneida, on April 26, 1946, he was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Cheeseman Rice. A lifelong resident of the area, Joel was educated in Oneida schools and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War, having served with the United States Navy Seebees MCB-9, in Viet Nam. He married Ann Rapasadi in the Town of Vienna, on Nov. 18, 2000.Prior to his retirement, Joel owned and operated Rice's Madison House and had previously retired from the City of Oneida Water Department. After his sale of the hotel, he was briefly employed with Kanon Valley Country Club and for many years with security at Vernon Downs. Joel was a member of the MCB-9 Reunion and the Camden Rod and Gun Club.Surviving besides his wife, Ann, are his daughters, Brandi Niles and her companion, Jeremy Callaway of Dripping Springs, Texas and Briedi and her husband, Peter Vibbert of North Fort Myers, Fla.; his former son-in-law, Scott Niles of Sherrill; his sister, Kim Colclough of Oneida; his four grandchildren, Heather Niles, Cari Niles, Peter Vibbert and Joel Vibbert and his companion, Katie Norris; his two great-grandchildren, Aubrii and Fynlee Vibbert; and several nieces and nephews, who called him "Uncle Bean." He was predeceased by a nephew, Kipp Colclough and a great-nephew, Tyler Buss.Joel's family invites everyone to a gathering for relatives and friends, beginning at 4 p.m., Saturday, at the American Legion, Oneida Post 169, 398 N. There was only one joel - just a fabulous person. Heading to the Madison Street Hotel after softball to see Joel and Annie was a real treat for us all. More recently, the infrequent, random times that I ran into Joel truly brightened my day - I was very lucky to have Joel as a friend and a part of my life for many years.
He will be missed by us all!

The many memories of going to the Madison House with Scott and Frank, for the best prime rib and watered down drinks. Lol. Sending our love and deepest sympathy to his beloved Annie, his daughters, grandchildren etc. Joel liked to think he was a tough guy in High School but we found out he was really a teddy bear underneath that facade. He was a great guy who would do anything for a friend (or anyone else for that matter). We were happy to be counted among his friends and are sorry we did not get a chance to say goodbye. To his beloved Annie, daughters, grandchildren etc. Joel was an amazing man that Bud and I were proud to call our friend. In High School he liked to personify the tough guy but he was the farthest thing from one. He was kind and gentle and a friend to all. We are so sorry to hear of his passing and so very sad we did not have a chance to say goodbye. Sending love and strength to his beloved family. We are out of state and will not be able to attend the gathering of family and friends at the Legion but so wish we could be there. We will be with you in spirit.....❤
