David Kates Obituary
David was born in 1932 to Henry and Irene Kates, in New York, NY. He started college at 16, earning degrees at Queens College, Penn State, and Florida State. At Penn State he met his bride, the flame-haired Shirley Lundeen. They were married at the Penn State chapel and together for 56 years.
During David's life he actively engaged in his community. In Newtown, CT he was a volunteer Fireman and elected to the Planning and Zoning Commission. In San Clemente, when retired, he tutored underprivileged high school students. David was a Grand Master bridge player, softball and tennis player, and bird watcher. He loved to travel. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren: Ben, Greg and Dan Kates of Boulder, CO, Cece and Jackie Andrews of Orinda, CA, and Maggie and Sam Kates of New Orleans, LA.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, November 30 at 9:00 a.m. at Tapestry Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 23436 Madero, Suite 140, Mission Viejo, California.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, http://www.pacificmmc.org, or your favorite charity.
