Glen Oglesby Obituary

went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 2018. Glen was born in Meadville, Mississippi on April 21, 1929 to James DeMann and Nina Bernice (Brown) Oglesby. After his mother's death, when Glen was only eight years old, he and his siblings went to live at the Baptist Children's Home in Jackson, Mississippi. He graduated from Central High School in Jackson and then stayed for a year at the Children's Home, where he did yard and farm work, and coached all of the Orphanage ball teams. He then enrolled and worked several jobs to put himself through two years of college at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. In 1951, Glen left Bob Jones to join the United States Marine Corps, and went to Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, where he auditioned for and became a member of the Parris Island Chapel Choir. After completing Boot Camp, Glen received orders to report for duty with the Second Division at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He obtained the rank of Sergeant and was responsible for completing all Discharges/Separations/Releases from, as well as Re-Enlistments to, Active Duty. While there, he also earned his USMC Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. In 1954, he was honorably discharged from the Marines and served in the USMC Reserves until 1959. He enrolled at the University of Mississippi (""Ole Miss"") to continue working toward his Bachelors Degree. It was there in Oxford at a Baptist Church function, that he became reacquainted with his future wife, Ida Faye Todd. The two had met years prior while Glen was visiting his sister Nina Jean at Blue Mountain College in Blue Mountain, Mississippi, as Nina Jean and Ida Faye were college roommates. 1955 he moved to St. Cloud to be near Ida Faye, who had accepted a teaching position at St. Cloud High School. They married in 1956 and enjoyed sixty-one wonderful years together. During those early years of marriage, Glen worked at the Regal Line Boat Factory and was Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 192 of St. Cloud. In the summers, Glen and Ida Faye returned to Ole Miss to further their education, and he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1959. Glen then worked at St Cloud High School, St. Cloud Junior High School and St Cloud Middle School for thirty years, where he taught Science, Health, Physical Education, and Driver's Ed, as well coaching several sports, including basketball, football and baseball. In 1965, Mr. Oglesby, fondly referred to as ""Coach O"", took his SCHS basketball team all the way to the Final Four of the State Championship, the first and only time in the school's history. In 2010, Glen was inducted into the SCHS Sports Hall of Fame. For many summers, Glen and Ida Faye returned to Ole Miss to work on their post-graduate degrees. After receiving his Advanced Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Glen become the Director of Guidance, first at St. Cloud Middle School and then at St. Cloud High School, where he served until he retired. During that time, he also served for many years as the Coordinator/Counselor for the Adult Education Program on the SCHS Campus. Glen was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Cloud for over sixty-two years and served in many leadership roles including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Training Union Teacher, Youth Choir Director, Member of the Pulpit (Pastor Search) Committee, Trustee, Bus Driver for Mission Trips and LLL trips, as well as singing in the Adult Choir for 48 years. His commitment to the faith also led him to support a local mission of FBC St. Cloud by serving as Interim Lay Pastor of Holopaw Baptist Church for eight years. After retirement, Glen and Ida Faye enjoyed summers at their North Carolina mountain house; travelling throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, and Europe; and spending time with their grandchildren. Glen is survived by his loving family: wife, Ida Faye Oglesby; four daughters, Deborah Jean Faulk, Sarah Nell Oglesby, Ida Faye Hooper (Jeff), Esther Ruth Gilbert (Conner); brothers, James (JD) DeMann Oglesby of Arlington, TX, Lenox Walter Oglesby (Bobbie) of Memphis, TN; grandsons, Patrick Faulk, Jonathan Hooper and Jake Gilbert; granddaughters, Laura Beth Hooper, Hannah Gilbert and Abby Gilbert. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nina Oglesby; sister, Nina Jean Presley; brothers, Melvin D. Oglesby (Woodie) and Myron Oglesby. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 20 from 2:00-6:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, January 21 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 1717 13th Street, St. Cloud.
