Patrick Hayes Obituary

Patrick Joseph Hayes

Virginia Beach - Patrick Joseph Hayes passed away at home on Monday, January 13, 2014. Born on February 13, 1938, in Louisville, Kentucky, Patrick is survived by his wife, Donna Ann Merwin Hayes; his five children, Carolyn (Kevin), Patrick (Chrissi), Greg (Pam), Missy (Shawn), and Jason (Adrian); his seventeen grandchildren, Hayley, Spencer, Tess, Wyatt, Lindsey, Lauren, Phoebe, Gannon, Gracie, Grady, Vivian, Mack, Eva, Ella, James, Amelia, and Sylvia; his siblings, Corinne, Mack, Paul, and Shirley; and his best friend, his beloved dog Candy. Patrick was predeceased by his parents, Herman Mack and Anna Jewel Hayes, and his siblings, Carolyn, James, and Charlene.

Patrick came from a gifted family of musicians and was a talented singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He recorded a number of hit songs using the stage name "Fannom Patrick and the Footnotes," and his 1963 song "Eva" made the Top 40 charts.

A true patriot, Patrick proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He instilled his spirit of service in his sons, who all continued his legacy and served in the 82nd Airborne as well.

After a successful career as an account executive, Patrick started his own business, Animal Crackers, where he combined his love of nature and animals by humanely removing wildlife from homes and businesses. Patrick was proud of this work and enjoyed telling stories of his unusual encounters.

Patrick was a hero to his family, who will dearly miss his sense of humor, his creativity and his ability to make any time spent with him memorable.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, January 20th, at 9:00 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, Va.

We have so many warm memories of the time we shared as neighbors. The cookouts, the balloon fights with the kids, the camping trips, the late night card games and making pickles in the kitchen are all a part of our fondest memories. May God bless you and keep you in his loving arms.

I will forever remember the years of laughter and music, of time spent with you and Aunt Donna before you all moved to VA, and the really special time I, and my sisters, spent with you when we came to visit. Thank you for some of the most special memories I have, Uncle Pat. I will miss you, but will carry with me those special memories, and relish the idea that there will now be jam sessions in heaven with you, Daddy and Granddaddy entertaining the angels. Let your music and laughter fill the heavens, and may your soul rest in the peace you so richly deserve. I love you, Uncle Pat. My heart and prayers are with you Aunt Donna, Carolyn, Buzz, Greg, Missy and Jason, and all your children. Take comfort in the love of one another and in all the precious memories of time with Uncle Pat. He will forever live on in all of you. I love you all!

My prayers are with the entire Hayes family. I know that Pat is at peace and that none of you can ever be who you are without his influence in your life. He lives on in each one of you.

Buzz, although I never met your dad, I know he was a special man. I know this because he had a wonderful son who is sensitive and talented beyond belief. I am so happy Chrissi has you in her life, and I think your dad was lucky to have you in his life as well. Know we all love you and that you and your family are in our prayers. Love, Aunt Nancy V.
