Libby..We will miss John's smiles when we entered the room. He is not only smiling, but talking and laughing in the Holy presence of the King. Keep the fond memories closely in your heart as you remember the priceless moments you shared as husband and wife. We love you!

Our dear Libby,
Pauline, I and our daughters extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family for the loss of John. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We who knew him well will sorely miss him. As student, collaborator, colleague and friend, John always remained true to himself. What you saw was pretty much what you got. That's why everyone loved him and respected and valued his counsel. Neither stuffy nor pompous, John understood the value of self-deprecation. He loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor and wit.
The hallmark of John's legacy to academia and to the economic sciences is the same traits that exerted so great an influence on his students and associates: the drive for relevance, concern for facts, insistence on rigorous analysis, constant re-examination of conventional wisdom and complete intellectual honesty.
I am tempted to quote the Bard and say that taken all in all, we will not see his like again. But John would likely have found that pretentious.
With warmest regards and affection,
Jim Papke

My Dad spoke of you and John often over the years (John was one of my father's favorite graduate students at Purdue). And I have wonderful memories from your visit to Cape Cod (approx. 40 years ago....)

Aunt Libby, I love you. Uncle John was an awesome man...he had to be to referee between you and me! I'll always remember how patient he was while waiting for dinner at "Stephani's" that one night and sailor babe and her sailor hanging out on "Daisy Mae."

Uncle John put me on his knee when I was very little, and was the first to introduced me to using a computer. Now, I make a living for my family with a computer. Thank you, Uncle John for all you did for our family. You are already missed. We love you.

Dear Libby and family,
It is with deepest sympathy that I read of John's death. I wish that I were in Athens for the service, but weather and distance have kept me busy at home in NC. Please know that my thoughts are with you all, and memories of John will live on in all of us.
