Sybil Kenngott Obituary

Sybil Newman

Morse Kenngott

1917-2011

Sybil Newman Morse Kenngott, 93, of Pensacola, FL passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011.

Mrs. Kenngott was born on July 29, 1917 in Jacksonville, FL. Her family moved to Daytona Beach, FL where she graduated from high school before entering the St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Jacksonville. She received her nursing degree as a Registered Nurse in 1938.

She married a young surgeon, Dr. George Morse, in 1941 and they moved to Pensacola where he began his medical practice with the Medical Center Clinic and she assumed the role of devoted wife and mother as she began raising her family.

Three years after the death of her first husband in 1967, she met Gilbert James Kenngott, a widower, who became her second husband and with whom she spent the next 22 wonderful years. Together they traveled world-wide and shared the joy of their children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and for several years taught children's Sunday school classes. She was active in several Mardi Gras organizations including the Merrymakers, Gaymaskers and Harlequins. She was former member of the Pensacola Yacht Club and Scenic Hills Country Club where she was an avid golfer and a member of the Scenic Hills Ladies Golf Association. She loved to read and was an excellent bridge player. She was also a founding member of the Gardenia Garden Club.

She will be remembered by her friends for her outgoing personality, her smile and her graciousness.

Mrs. Kenngott is preceded in death by her parents, Clinton Walter Newman and Leona B. "Toni" Newman; her two wonderful husbands, Dr. George Wray Morse and Gilbert James Kenngott; her daughter, Anne Morse Shearer and her sisters, Doris N. Bartlett and Evelyn N. Parker.

Survivors include her two sons, G. Wray Morse, II (Susan) of Birmingham, AL and Philip Newman Morse (Pamela) of Germantown, TN; two daughters, Diane K. Stephens (Michael) of Newport Beach, CA and Meryl K. Morrison of Pensacola, FL; eight grandchildren, George Wray Morse III, Lindsay Morse Batelli, Ryan N. Morse, Steven D. Kelly, William B. Shearer III, Annette Shearer Sullivan, Christopher Stephens and Cara Stephens Lies. She also had ten great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 6-7:30pm Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. Graveside Service will be held 11:00am Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Bayview Memorial Park with Dr. Christopher L. Morse officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice of Pensacola, ARC Gateway Foundation, The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Allyson Thomas and Angela Davis of TLC Caregivers; Dr. Bradley Pyle, Crystal Lee, Nancy and the entire nursing staff at Select Specialty Hospital; as well as the nurses and staff at the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Residence.

HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.

She will always be Mrs. Morse to me because it is hard to switch when you first met someone when you were 10. Her daughter Anne and I became friends for life and I cherish the memories of my numerous visits to Blackshear Avenue with its atmosphere of warm welcome, adventure, delicious conversation and food, and the way Mrs. Morse made me feel like I was family. My heart goes out to Wray and Philip and their families, Anne's family and the Kenngotts. We are all going to miss her so much.
