William Hale Obituary

\William Griffith Hale
DATELINE: Portland
William Griffith "Willie" Hale age 68 of Portland passed away on Friday July 31, 2015 at his home with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Portland on July 12, 1947 the son of William B. and Sarah Griffiths Hale. Willie attended South Portland schools graduating from South Portland High School class of 1967. After graduation, Willie enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served honorably for four years. Upon being discharged he worked various jobs. On June 11, 1979 Willie became a Portland Firefighter within the Portland Fire Department, and he was a member of IAFF Local 740. He was assigned to various fire companies, and in 1983 he was assigned to Engine 3 on Stevens Avenue where he remained for 20 years plus on Platoon 3.
In 1996, along with Engine 3's crew he received the "Deputy Chief William Steele" Unit Citation, and he also received the Oliver T. Sanborn Administration Service Award. Willie retired from the Portland Fire Department on January 31, 2006, but remained a member of Local 740 IAFF.
Upon retirement from the department he went on to work as a school bus driver for the Town of Scarborough. Willie enjoyed his job and especially enjoyed driving his students to and from school and activity trips. He was also employed part-time for Shaw's Supermarket in Scarborough for many years. Willie enjoyed great times with his family and friends. His children and grandchildren nicknamed him "Grumpy" which he truly enjoyed. He made and kept in contact with his friends even after he retired from the fire department. He enjoyed attending IAFF Conventions with his wife, BFFL's and good friends of IAFF Local 740. Willie enjoyed playing darts and was a member of the Maine Dart Association where he won many trophies. He put his family and friends before himself and always had a smile on his face. He will truly be missed by his family and all his friends.
He is predeceased by his parents. Willie is survived by his loving wife Gail (Beking) Dennison-Hale of Portland, 3 daughters; Kimberly M. and her husband Michael Wilson of Cordova, Alaska, Michele L. and her husband Thomas Harmon of Lyman, Kristen A. We were deeply saddened to hear of Willie's passing. He was the Eight Corners bus driver for both our daughters, who just adored him. As parents, we were so happy they were in such safe hands, and Willie always greeted us warmly. Your family is in our prayers during this difficult time. Sincerely, The Aubrey Family.

So sorry for your loss. I got to see Willie each day at Scarborough Middle School cafeteria. He always made us smile, and he loved to eat the food we had prepared. He especially loved the brownies. He will be missed.

Gail, I am so sorry to hear of Willie's passing. I was lucky enough to see him a few weeks ago at Turf's when I stopped by to watch the Wednesday night league. We had a nice conversation and, being Willie, he never complained about his health problems. He was upbeat and positive. It's nice to have that memory of him. I always enjoyed the numerous times I saw him at darts. He was a great man.

It's no wonder that the only photo I could find last night of Willie was the back of Willie's and Valente's heads putting chains on L3. Willie never avoided hard work, never complained about work (even when his nap was interrupted), and I could always count on him. He helped save the lives and memories for so many people--and he kept his brothers and sisters safe. Thank you Willie for being a part of my life and for helping to keep me safe. I was barely out of my teens back then and you represented what it meant to be a life saver so very well. Rest in peace, my friend.

Gail, I am so sorry for your loss. Willie was a great guy. I think back to the days when he would come into the office in Westbrook,to monitor calls made for PFF's annual fundraiser. He would sit quietly in a chair reading a book and one would think he was not paying attention to what was going on around him, however, he didn't miss a word. He knew in an instant if someone said something they should not have said and would address it immediately. (I really think he told them that you would have their head on a platter if they didn't stop)
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time. Love ya

I never knew anyone to have a bad word to say about Willie. I remember him laughing so hard he was crying when he recounted Tommy's dip in a swimming pool in full gear. Thinking of you, Gail

Dearest Gail, Karl and I will miss Willie terribly as well. All his trips by the house to go to Starbucks everyday to get your caramel macchiato, he'd always stop and comment on the house we were redoing or ask for Karl's help on the pool or bike or other project. Always waved at me when I went by to work and again coming home......going to miss him a lot. Love you my friend, my neighbor for all these years......22 oz. right?

Willie was one of a kind. I will always remember he and Tommy bantering about who should shut the light off in the dizzy ward. He was a great man and will be truly missed.

We are thinking of you Gail. He was a great guy and great to work with. I can see him standing in the door at 3's house with his coffee cup and his silly grin. So sorry for your loss. Scott
