Donald Scott Obituary

Donald C. Scott, 88, passed away peacefully at home with his family on January 26, 2024. As an only child, he was born on August 15, 1935, to Edward Joseph Scott and Beatrice Potts Scott. Married for 61 years and 14 days, he is survived by wife, Martha Singletary Scott; son, Craig Scott (Andrea); daughter, Stephanie Thompson (Bill); and granddaughters, Morgan Schiedel (Ben), Meghan Brandon (Carter) and Nicole Scott.

After graduating from Granby High School, Donald enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserves at the young age of 17 and served until his retirement in 1997. He joined the Norfolk Police Dept. in 1957. During his long career, he worked as a homicide detective, was one of the very first members of the Norfolk Police Dive Team and was an instructor at the pistol range for 27 years. He retired in 1997 after having proudly served for 40 years.

Donald led a remarkable life, leaving behind cherished memories, a legacy of story-telling, and classic practical jokes. He will be fondly remembered for his leadership and work ethic, as well as his fun-loving spirit. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him and the community for which he proudly served.

Viewing and visitation will begin at 1:00 on Monday, February 5, 2024, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk, followed by the funeral service at 2:00 and the graveside burial at 3:00. Family and friends are invited to the home immediately following the burial for a reception.

Donald Scott was a wonderful neighbor. He had a fantastic sense of humor and told great stories. If you wanted to know what was going on in the neighborhood he was your man. We will miss his sweet smile.

I met Don in 1965 when I was assigned to the FBI Office in Norfolk. Don later was a robbery squad detective and since I worked bank robberies with my partner Dick Rafferty, we spent a lot of time with Don. Don was one of the many detectives that I was fortunate to work with and learn from. We not only worked together but also became very good personal friends and though I was transferred from the Norfolk Office in 1975, Don and I never lost contact except for the past few months. I now understand why he did not return my phone calls lately. I will always consider Don and Martha as best friends of my wife Ramona and I. I will keep them in my prayers. Don was one of the best officers I ever had the opportunity and pleasure to work with. Nick O'Hara, FBI, Retired, Minneapolis, MN.

What a very nice man. Devoted husband and family man. He was a good friend to all police. Don (Scottie) served with my husband Fred on Norfolk Police Department and they enjoyed their friendship for many years.
God bless his family, he will be so missed.

I was always proud of my Uncle Donald. When I was younger and we would visit my Aunt Bea I would always hope that he would be there! I reconnected about a year ago and I was so happy that I did. He had so much information about my mom & dad. I will miss him. Barry

I was in the Coast Guard Reserves with Don for many years. He was a wonderful man and I always enjoyed when talking with him. Remember one year when we had a Christmas party at the Marine Corps building and him playing Santa. The kids really enjoyed it. So sorry for your loss.

Don & I worked together at the pistol range from 1985 to 1997. Don & I also worked together in the USCG reserves. It was the best of times. He will be missed by his brothers & sisters. Don was the best boss/partner I ever had. I love you Don.

Sgt. Scott was one of my class counselors and our range Officer. Never a raised voice, led by encouraging words and a smile that reassured even the most nervous rookie, everything would be ok. A true gentleman and a Cops Cop! Rest easy in the hands of Our Lord Don!

Sergeant Scott, thank you for teaching me the things that kept me alive in my police career. My memories of you and Herbie were never far from me in the most dangerous of moments. You were my hero.
