Mark Bowden Obituary

Mark K. Bowden Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Mark Kenneth Bowden Sr., 56, of the 700 block of Abilene Ct., died Sept. 8, 2011 in Norfolk. Mark was born on Long Island, N.Y., the son of Jane Schling Bowden and the late Samuel Bowden. He retired from the New York City Fire Department Rescue 4 in 2001; in addition to that he was a former member of the East Northport Volunteer Fire Department and chief of the Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Mark was most recently employed with Cox Communications in Virginia Beach. Mark is survived by his mother, Jane Schling Bowden of Hendersonville, N.C.; his wife, Meg Bowden; two sons, Mark Kenneth Bowden Jr. and Tyler Matthew Bowden, all of Chesapeake. He is also survived by a sister, Marjorie A. Bowden of Coxsackie, N.Y.; and a brother, Richard A. Bowden of Reno, Nev. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Chesapeake Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments by the Rev. Kathleen M. Bobbitt and the Rev. John Rohrs. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the funeral home today from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Educational Fund for Mark and Tyler Bowden, Towne Bank 297 Constitutional Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 or any branch. Donations may also be made to the Great Bridge Marching Wildcats c/o G.B.B.P.A., 301 W. Hanbury Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hdoliver.com.

I was fortunate to meet Mark in February 2010 Guns and Hoses Ski Trip. We shared some great laughs, conversations and skiing. Mark, you will be missed. May you be at eternal peace.
