Minerva Johnson Obituary
Mitzi was extremely proud to be part of the first graduating class of St. Vincent DePaul School of Nursing in 1947. She had been a cadet student nurse through the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII where she met the love of her life, William "Bill" Johnson. They were secretly married in June of 1947 while Mitzi was still in nurse's training and then married again in October in a formal church wedding surrounded by family and friends. During their 60 years of marriage, they enjoyed celebrating both anniversary dates.
Mitzi was a member of Tabernacle Church of Norfolk and the Ladies Auxiliary of Gideons International. She served with the senior citizens ministry of Tabernacle Church and as a volunteer with Mobile Meals She also enjoyed keeping both her nursing and Manteo High School alumni connected through regular communications and class reunions as class secretary.
In addition to her beloved husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Nacie and Maude Peele Austin; sister and brother-in-law, Dalton and Ruby Burrus; sons-in-law, Dr. Samuel (Chuck) C. Patteson, Jr. and Jan G. Bedogne; and three grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie K. Mee (David) and Lucinda Bedogne; son Thomas J. Johnson (Janet); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and four nieces and one nephew.
A funeral service will be held at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk on June 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation preceding the service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Tabernacle Church of Norfolk Missionary Fund, 7000 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505; or to the Gideons International, PO Box 12271, Norfolk, VA 23541, for the purchase of Bibles to spread God's word.
