EAST PEORIA - Steven J. Stella, 50, of East Peoria passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at 7:45 P.M. at his residence after being diagnosed in May 2015 with Glioblastoma.
Steve was born on July 24, 1965, in Peoria to Gary F. and Tera Lee Calvetti Stella. He married Cathy Dobbins on October 2, 1993, in Peoria. She survives and resides in East Peoria.
Also surviving is their daughter, Abby Stella; his father, Gary of Peoria Heights; one sister, Stefani Stella of St. Louis, MO; maternal grandmother, Jerry Calvetti of Pekin; two nieces; and six nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Tera L. Calvetti and his maternal grandfather, Dominic Calvetti.
Steve was a 1984 graduate of Woodruff High School in Peoria, and then attended Illinois Central College. For 25 years, he worked for the Peoria Park District.
He was an active member and past deacon of the United Presbyterian Church in Peoria. Steve volunteered for several years as a Camp Dad for Jump Start Gymnastics Team at their Flip Fest Summer Gymnastics Camp in Tennessee with his daughter Abby.
Steve could often be found lending a helping hand to a friend or neighbor in need. He always enjoyed visiting and getting to know the neighborhood children, who would often stop by to visit. He never knew an enemy; his selfless personality will be dearly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jump Start Competitive Gymnastics Team in Peoria or the United Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service for Steve will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at United Presbyterian Church in Peoria. Rev. Dr. Stephen McKinney-Whitaker will officiate. There will be a visitation on Sunday, April 17, 2016, from 3 to 5 P.M. at the church.
