KAY JEAN ACKERMAN
PORTSMOUTH —Kay Jean Ackerman, 77, of Portsmouth, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Ironton, Ohio native was born November 12, 1939, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Catherine Grounds Pernell. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ronald "Butch" L. Ackerman Sr.
Kay attended Hanging Rock and Rock Hill Schools. She was a former cashier for Wal-Mart in New Boston for 26 years. Kay was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Norwood, Ohio and volunteered at the St. Thomas Aquinas Summer Camp. She enjoyed bowling and volunteering at the Southern Ohio Medical Center. Her passion was her pets, her dog Baby and her cat.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by:
a son: Ronald Lee Ackerman, Jr.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by:
two sons: Harley "Deke" (Tammy) Hughes of Birmingham, AL and Bengy L. (Cathy) Hughes of West Portsmouth, OH
two brothers: Gary "Pete" Pernell of Wheelersburg, OH and Bill Pernell of Columbus, OH
fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren
Funeral services will be 11:00A.M. Friday, October 20, 2017 at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 South 7th Street, Ironton, Ohio with Father Joseph Greenwell officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home with the Rosary Service beginning at 7:45 PM. To the Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.
