Howard Cole Obituary

Howard David Cole, 83, of Owego, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Amos and Bertha Cole; brother and sister-in-law, Glenn "Bud" and Delores (Dee) Cole; brother-in-law, Raymond "Buzzie" Anderson. Howard is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Cole; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen Cole, Binghamton, Eileen and Chuck Selnekovic, Owego, Norma and James McFadden, Owego; three grandchildren, Kyle Seymour, Marley and Devon McFadden; two sisters-in-law, Doreen Wedge, Margaret (Anderson) Pierce; several nieces and nephews. Howard was a graduate of Owego Free Academy and served in the Navy during WWII on the USS North Carolina. Upon returning, he started his work career as a professional driver for his brother's trucking company and Dickinson's Bus Company. Then Howard and his family bought and maintained their dairy farm for 34 years. He had no interest in retiring, so he obtained his real estate license and sold real estate for many years and later worked for Tioga County Public Transportation driving bus from 2002 until July of this year. He was very thankful for the opportunity this gave him to help and meet many special passengers. Howard was very community minded and held the following offices, Past Commander and Life Member of the American Legion Post #401, member of "Kick-a-poos" Drum Corps, Legion Drum Corps; Tioga County Fire Commissioner; Past President and member of the Tioga County Fair Board; board member on several Dairy Associations. Howard loved the outdoors, skiing, fishing, horseback riding. But most of all he loved being around his family on his beloved farm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at the Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home, 15 Park St., Owego with the Rev. Phil Jordan, officiating. Burial will follow in the Tioga Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Howard Cole's memory to Tioga County Rural Ministry, 143 North Avenue, Owego, NY 13827. The family would like to thank Dr. Kwiatkowski and his staff for their support, Judy White for her good counsel, the staff of Tioga County Public Nurses, Hospice and the neighbors "on the hill" for all their help. To the family, I will miss Howard (Peepers) as he was a truly strong, respectable and gentle man. I remember the times with my dad, Dr. Phelps when we visited the farm on calls to care for the cows. The group that built up the Pheasant Farm at the old farm house that Howard supported. Dad and I enjoyed the deer and grouse hunting on the farm also. The many years with the Legion drum corps were the best and knowing Howard was there along with Jim Wood to keep us younger folks in line was truly a memory I carry today. My folks and Howard and Jane spent enjoyable times together on our boat on Cayuga Lake, and Howard would favor a round or two of skeet with us at the Tioga Sportsmans Club. I always respected him and will truly miss him. God speed and to the family always remember the best of times.

Jane and Family,

We are sorry for your loss. I would have liked to got down to see Howard when he came home from the hospital, but with the broken leg I do not get around that easy.

I will never forget the day we found the mushrooms in the woods. Howard and I thought they were eatable and we had grand plans on eating them! Thankfully Jane was smarter than us and stopped us in time.

I guess God needs someone to milk his cows. He wanted the best, so he called on Howard!

Mrs. Cole, Karen, Norman and Eileen, One of my fondest childhood memories involves a visit to the Cole farm in 1968, when I was 12. Mr. and Mrs. Cole invited my mom, my sister and I to visit for some fishing and swimming, and it turned into an afternoon of adventure. I caught more fish than I ever imagined possible, got a face full of cobwebs in the barn, and felt bad when Norma cut her head open on a nail protruding from a barn beam. Mr. Cole knew that as a 12 year-old, I likely had not yet noticed how pretty his daughters were, and he was right, but he served as a tour guide nonetheless - a gracious and welcoming host. I knew nothing of his service to our country, but I knew he was a proud man, full of love and generosity and self-respect. As I grew older, many adults would become "Bill," or "Ron," but Mr. Cole would always be Mr. Cole. He was such a kind man, and as time passes, you will be continually amazed and moved when so many people tell you how much he meant to them. I'm very sorry Mr. Cole has passed on, but very grateful for having known such a fine man. Lots of love, SL
