Edward Baker Obituary
MAY 24, 1913 - JAN 14, 2010. Passed away of natural causes on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, Ca with family at his side. Born a fourth generation San Franciscan on May 24, 1913 to Arthur William and Alice Mae Baker. He lived in San Francisco until he was five and the family moved to Petaluma, in 1919. He attended Petaluma schools and was president of the High School Student Body, graduating in 1930. He received an AB Degree in PreClinical Sciences in 1934 from Stanford University and graduated from Stanford Medical School after securing an internship on the Stanford Service at the San Francisco County Hospital in 1938. He came to Modesto in 1938 as Resident Physician at the Scenic General Hospital. In 1940 he became Medical Director of the Sutter County Hospital. With the onset of World War II he was recalled to Scenic General Hospital where he served until activating his commission in the U.S. Navy in 1943. On active sea duty on the U.S.S. Kaskaskia with the fleet from Eniwetok, Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Kerrama, Okinawa to Japan. After being discharged from active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1946 he returned to Stanford Medical School for specialized training in Urology. In 1948, he returned to Modesto to join Dr. Hans Hartman in the practice of Urology which continued until his retirement in 1981, after 50 years of medicine. He was one of the original founders of Doctor's Medical Center which became the flagship around which National Medical Enterprises was formed in the 1960's, serving on the board for 15 years. For a number of years he was the Urology Consultant at the Modesto State Hospital, visiting urologist at Castle Air Force Base, and Chief of Urology at Scenic General Hospital. A charter member of Sportsman of Stanislaus, charter member of Spyglass Hill Golf Club in Pebble Beach, member of Del Rio County Club for 50 years and a member of the Elks Club for 59 years. His professional memberships included the American Medical Association, California Medical Association, Fellow American College of Surgeons and Diplomat of the American Board of Urology. He had an avid interest in golf and a lifelong passion in photography. He was a world traveler, and with his wife, visited five continents. He was an avid reader of history, biography and politics. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Marge Baker; a son Bradford (Shelly) Baker of Modesto; a sister Evelyn Karsevar of Pope Valley, Ca.; several nephews and nieces in Northern California. (Step children) Tracy Winters of Carmel, Trent Shearn of Carmel, Melissa Shearn of Bel-Air, Ca, Robin (Donna) Shearn of Livermore. (Step grandchildren) John (Krista) Winters of Santa Cruz, Matt Winters of Washington D.C., Kyle Shearn of Livermore, Nicole (Dan) Slavic of Pleasanton, Elyesse Milliken of Livermore and Caregiver Arenda Van-Vleit of Hughson. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Yola Baker, his son, Edward W. Baker III and his brothers Walter and Arthur Baker. A Celebration of Life will be held at Del Rio Country Club, 801 Stewart Rd, Modesto, CA 95356 on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 1:00pm. Remembrances may be made to the Edward W.
