Tod Sweeney Obituary

Tod Paul Sweeney died peacefully after a hard fought battle with cancer on March 1, 2010. He was in the place he loved most in the world, his home in Sonoma Valley, surrounded by his wife and two beloved sons. Tod was only 56 but he made the most of those blessed years. Tod was born on Nov. 22, 1953 in San Francisco but grew up in the bucolic hills of Greenbrae, CA. He was the second son of Daniel J. Sweeney and Zora Veljkov. His older brother, Kevin and younger brother, Dana, were among the lucky children to roam that area when cows still grazed at the top of the hills, lizards and frogs were abundant and kids could play well into the evening hours without care or worry. Tod attended Greenbrae Elementary School, Kent Middle School, Redwood High School, Santa Clara University and later received degrees in viticulture from Santa Rosa J.C. and teaching credentials from Dominican University in San Rafael. Tod was the kind of person who fit in with any and all kinds of groups...basketball players, nerds, shy folks, outgoing ones...he loved life and accepted people for who they were. His friends were as numerous and eclectic as the man and reflected a well lived and amazing life. Tod is survived by his soul mate, wife of 27 yrs. and best friend, Cheryl Hillebrand Sweeney; his two beloved sons, Tyler and Austin Sweeney; his mother Zora Veljkov Sweeney of Greenbrae; brother Kevin Sweeney and partner Dion Blundell of Cathedral City; and brother, Dana Sweeney of Chicago; his father-in-law, William Hillebrand of Grass Valley, CA.; his sister-in-law, Lauren Hillebrand Eason and brother-in-law, Jerry Eason as well as many loved cousins throughout the country. Tod was a truly compassionate person who maintained an appreciation for life and his many blessings. He will be remembered for his gift of gab, amazing trivia knowledge, wonderful sense of humor and a quickness of wit that stayed with him even in the darkest of times, his expertise at poker, love of scotch and basketball and being a die-hard Giants fan. He was fortunate to have such wonderful steadfast friendships, many from the Greenbrae days, many, many from his college years and his "studies?" abroad in Rome and lucky him even from his work years at various wineries and finally where he ended up finding his true calling, as a teacher for 19 years at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa. He loved teaching and the people he worked with. A celebration of life will take place in April at The Sweeney home. Date has not yet been established. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to Montgomery High School, c/o Laurie Fong, 1250 Hahman Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95405. Subject line: Tod Sweeney Donation. Arrangements cared for by DUGGAN'S MISSION CHAPEL, MISSION CREMATION SERVICE, 525 WEST NAPA STREET, SONOMA, CA 95476. Inquiries can be made to them at (707) 996-3655 or www.duggansmissionchapel.com. Dear Sweeney Family,
Growing up with Tod in Greenbrae made him a part of all the Tuckers lives and memories. We are grateful for that past, and have always appreciated knowing that the familiarity and friendship would be there whenever our paths crossed. Enjoy the smiles as you frequently remember Tod, and we will too.

Mr. Sweeney...what can I say other than MHS and the world has truly lost someone special. You were my teacher for 3 years and I can't begin to tell you all the great memories I have of you and your class. Your spirit as a teacher and person whas truly amazing...anyone who was lucky enough to have you graze their life knows it. You were there for all of us at MHS and I can't thank you enough for all that you have done. My daugher will be attending Montgomery next year and you were the one teacher I was hoping she would be luck enough to have and experience. MHS will not be the same without you. I know you'll keep em rolling with laughter up there. With love, Kimberly Williams, MHS Class of 1996

Sweendoggy, you were the best! MHS will be a sadder place without your charm and good humor. You were our fearless leader in Student Gov't 1993-96. I always loved coming back to visit you and Jackson and reminiscing. Keep 'em rollin' in the aisles up there - we'll see you later! Much love to your family.

Cheryl, Tyler and Austin, I knew Tod from the Loyola Rome Center. He was exactly as you describe him here. A real presence; very funny, and a good friend to all who knew him. I can see him with High School students; and especially as a loving husband and a great Dad.

I knew him only briefly. You are the lucky ones to have had him in your lives.

God Bless you all. Tod will be missed by all who knew him.

Sincerely,

Sue O'Shaughnessy Walsh

Mr. Sweeney was my teacher at Montgomery High school over 10 years ago. He was always making me laugh and I truly enjoyed being in his class. Thank you Mr. Sweeney! You may be gone but not forgotten.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Sweeney. He was a wonderful teacher with a LOT of personality! I will never forget when he and another teacher dressed up at an assembly. Mr. Sweeney was Neil Diamond, and the other (I think it was Mr. Jackson) was Barbra Streisand. They lip synched to "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore." I still chuckle when I think of it. I called him Mr. Diamond the rest of my years at Montgomery. (Occasionally bowing, saying that I was not worthy.) In my yearbook, he signed, "I know I will see you at each one of my concerts! Always, Neil." What a wonderful man he was. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed. The world needs more people like Mr. Sweeney.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
