I just heard the sad news of Carla's passing. I worked with her during the late 90s and found her to be a great colleague and, more importantly, an extraordinarily kind and warm person. Condolences to her family and loved ones.

On behalf of the UW-Madison School of Social Work, where Carla received her BA and MSSW degrees, we offer our condolences to the family. Reading her obituary it is clear that she made many contributions both as a social worker and as an LGBT advocate in her personal life. We will include a note about Carla's passing in our next alumni newsletter so that information is shared with her fellow classmates.

I knew Carla when we were both students at the University of Wisconsin. I've always valued her friendship and whenever I think back to those years she was always in those thoughts. I can't think of a more positive, vibrant, happy person than Carla, and I'm sure she continued that way throughout life. My deepest condolences to her partner and children.

Deepest sympathy to Gigi, Zoe and Fransesca. I had the privilege to be mentored by Carla in my social work practice when i first moved to Providence. Carla was so kind, suppotiveand helpful. She was as modest as she was respected. our path met occasionally throughout the years and i always felt that it was easy to reconnect. I will miss her and can only imagine what a loss she is to her loved ones.

Carla's work in human sexuality while a dean at Brown University in the mid-1970s was groundbreaking at the time. She touched countless lives in the early years of feminism and gay liberation and helped hundreds of students become more accepting of themselves and each other. Decades later, she and Gigi became our neighbors in Edgewood and they turned a boring white house into a beautiful home splashed with purple and flowers and, above all, love.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Having lost a dear relative to pancreatic cancer myself, there are no words to describe the pain, despair and sorrow.
What helped me to cope and I hope this will help the Hansen family during your bereavement too; draw close to the Hearer of prayer and welcome loving support and comfort from others.
This will not take away all the pain you bear but it can cushion it in order for you to endure.

Carla was for me the bridge; for years she spoke the words that held me and that I needed to hear to be able to feel the pain and the joy of this life, to be able to hold others. What I understood as her vision & curiosity remains with me, is indistinguishable now from my own. It is impossible to imagine my life without having known her steady guidance, her brave intelligence, and her centering love. And I was only one of so many people she touched and changed so profoundly. My deepest condolences to the great loves of her life - Gigi, Zoe, and Francesca. I am so sorry for your loss.

I learned with sadness today of Carla's death. I hadn't seen her in recent years, but remember her as a friend and colleague thru the 1970's and 1980's. She was a fine person, good clinician, a great teacher and courageous advocate for cultural and social change. My condolences to her family. Jim McDonald

I'll never forget when I was adopting my son, Carla sat down with me on my front porch and said "So, tell me about it". I was, of course, desperate to hear her advice, so I replied with "Please, you tell ME." She responded simply "It was the best thing I ever did." The gift she gave me in the that moment goes far beyond words. I saved every card you wrote to us throughout our adoption milestones and celebrations. Zoe was one of the first people to hold my new baby when he came to us. I'm so lucky to have had you in my life, if even for a short time.

I was so sad to hear of Carla's passing from a colleague at work today. Although we have not been in touch through the years, she was my first clinical supervisor as a new Master's level social work student, and like for many others, made an indelible impression on my life and career, teaching me important values which have stayed with me for over 30 years in my professional life. My deepest sympathies. Kate Baker
