Charles. Shadoian Obituary

SHADOIAN, CHARLES. J., SR., 85, a retired principal and teacher, died unexpectedly after a short illness at Fatima Hospital on Saturday, December 29. Born in 1922 in West New York, New Jersey, he lived most of his life in North Providence. He was the son of the late John and Margaret (Jamgochian) Shadoian, and the husband of the late Bertha (LeBlanc) Shadoian.

He is survived by his six children: Lynn Havice of Junction City, Kansas, Charles Shadoian, Jr. of Foster, Judith Humphrey of North Providence, James Shadoian of Cumberland, Virginia, Dorothy Dominick of Chepachet, and Donald Shadoian of Westerly; his ten grandchildren: Jeremy Havice, Jennifer Ward, Jacqueline Havice, Rebecca Munoz, Jeffrey Shadoian, Nicole Hoffman, Timothy Beauchamp, Hannah Shadoian, Catherine Dominick and Finnegan Shadoian, and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Richard Shadoian of North Providence.

A 1940 graduate of Classical High School, he was an outstanding athlete in baseball and football. He continued with baseball at Providence College, but chose teaching over pursuing a professional baseball career. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, serving in World War II and earning a Purple Heart after being seriously wounded in France shortly before the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return to the States, he completed his bachelor's degree at Providence College in 1947.

His career in education spanned 50 years of service to the Town of North Providence, as a teacher and union leader at Greystone School, a coach in track, basketball and baseball, and a principal at Centerdale Elementary School. He earned his master's degree from Rhode Island College in 1961. He retired in 1999. He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church and was a former member of the North Providence Johnston Boys & Girls Club Men's Association and North Providence Boosters' Association.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Rhode Island College Foundation, 600 Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Providence, RI 02908, Charles J. Shadoian Sr. Scholarship Fund.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 3rd at 8:45 AM from the ROBBINS FUNERAL HOME, 2251 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow at St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours Wednesday from 4-8 PM. For messages of condolence and directions, please visit www.robbinsfuneralhome.com.

Dear Jimmy

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. My sister told me that she was able to attend the wake but I was not able to so I wanted to send my condolences. Your dad was so sweet to come to my mom's wake just 1 month ago and he told us what fond memories you have of my brother and my mom. Two very special people will be missed for all that they have done. Take care.

Sincerely,

Joanne Butera DiOrio (Joseph's sister)

To our Dear cousins:
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to all of you. We loved Uncle Charlie very much . He was such a special person. We just had dinner together on the 22nd for our mom and dad's anniversary. He was happy and smiling. He told me he received my Christmas card with my son David's picture in it. He told me how he looked forward to receiving my cards. We took pictures which I will share with you. He liked to ask David about school and talk about Jeffrey because everyone at Ponagansett knew Jeffrey and they thought they were brothers. Uncle would tease David about continuing on in Jeffrey's footsteps with the Shadoian name. We certainly will miss him. We are praying for all of your family. May the peace of the Lord Jesus be with all of you and yours. See you soon.
Love, The family of Dave, Debra, and

Dad in the paper today and I would like to send my condolences. It sounds like he was a fabulous guy and teacher...and he went to Classical!!! It's just so sad to lose your parents. I have lost both of mine. However, you do have quite a large family which will be a comfort, as you know.

My sincerest condolences on the passing of your Dad. Goodness ! I remember him from when I was a young girl, as well as when he was the Principal of Centredale School when my Elizabeth was a student there. Each day when I would pick her up after school, he'd be outside making sure the children were safely leaving the school grounds, and we'd joke around. He always had a smile for us. He was a great guy who helped raise a wonderful family. God bless him !!

My thoughts to the Shadoian family on the passing of Charles, or, as I always referred to him--and still do, even today--Mr. Shadoian. I was a student of his in 5th and 6th grade at Greystone Elementary school in the mid-60s, and an unlikely, rather ineffective member of his vaunted baseball teams, despite no lack of his instruction or heartfelt encouragement. I remember Mr. Shadoian as a firm but fair teacher, with a quiet but intense and evident desire that his pupils make the best of their individual abilities, whether academically or in sport. Looking back, I realize his example was the first instance I can recall of the lasting and life-long impact a teacher can have on a student. I always did strive to do my best under his guidance and instruction, because his regard was never given out lightly. On those rare occasions when he'd look over his glasses to tell me I had done something well, from aceing a test to (finally) taking a decent swing at a fastball, I knew in my bones that I actually had. He was both a fine teacher and man of integrity. My sincere condolences.
