Dorothy Andrews Obituary

ANDREWS, DOROTHY M. (HARRISON) age 100, of Warwick, died on Thursday, June 2, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late George E. Andrews, Jr. Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late James and Mabel (Smith) Harrison, she lived in Warwick since 1953. She was a graduate of Pawtucket High School. Mrs. Andrews was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. She was also a member of P.E.O., the Order of Eastern Star and the Governor Francis Farms Garden Club. She was the sister of the late Gala Kelley, Bradford Harrison, and Barbara Harrison. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Claire D. Harrison of Wrentham, MA; four nieces, Beverly Howland (Harold) of Lincoln, RI; Shirley Fogarty (Tom) of Bloomfield Hills, MI; Gala McCurdy (Robert) of North Attleboro, MA; and Elizabeth Andrews of Millis, MA; and four nephews, David Harrison (Mary) of Plainville, MA; Robert Berry of Canada; Mark Andrews (Nancy) of Bristol, RI; and Scott Andrews (Michele) of Riverside, RI; and 19 great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Dorothy will be remembered for her kindness to friends, family and neighbors; her personal strength and perseverance; her ability to gracefully overcome life's obstacles; and her devotion to and love for her late husband, George. She loved gardening, flower arranging, oil painting, music and crafts. She was devoted to the support of others in the pursuit of education, particularly the education of women, as expressed by her longstanding membership in P.E.O., an organization dedicated to advancing the education of women. She was proud of her independent spirit. After completing secretarial school, she moved on her own to California and worked there in various positions for three years before returning to Rhode Island. She was known as a highly-valued employee while working at several companies, most notably the Narragansett Electric Company in Providence, where she met her husband, George. She worked well into her 30's and then retired to pursue homemaking and her long, happy marriage. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 16, at 11 a.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick. Burial will follow in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, North Kingstown. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, June 15, from 4-7 p.m. Contributions in her memory may be made to P.E.O. Chapter A, c/o Marti Bower, 21 Set-n-sun Drive, Hope, Rhode Island 02831 or to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 143 Ann Mary Brown Drive, Warwick, Rhode Island 02888. www.barrettandcotter.com

Over the course of about three years I had the pleasure of getting to know Dot and her family. We can all learn a lesson about strength, character, and courage from them. I watched the Dot and the family scramble things together at every obstacle to do what Dot wanted and what was best for her. Dot will be missed greatly.

God bless Dot and her family. She was my oldest friend. I lived across the street from her from 1953-1958.I remember when her and Georges house was built. She used to let me sit on her back stoop and drink lemonade. I visited with her many times over the years. I could still be the little boy from across the street. Dot was my connection to my childhood. I will miss our conversations! You could learn a lot about how to handle life from her. She will be sorely missed!!
